NOTE: Just to be clear, no, as of this moment this is the only forum that I have asked help for with this problem. There was one previously, but they could not help and have sent me here.

Repeat: Another site was used previously, but not simultaneously with this one or any other.

What follows is a recap of the past few days:

Several nights ago whilst browsing the internet, a false Java update resulted in my computer becoming infected with XP Antivirus 2012.

Using the general guide from this site, I took care of it, but soon learned that the internet (of which still actually worked to some degree during the attack) was no longer functioning.

Still, there was some limited connectivity, though not enough to repair the damage left by the virus. My antiviruses could not be updated or fixed, and Windows Firewall could not be turned on, all of the reason of not being able to connect.

However, the computer did not seem to be aware of any problem with the connection, and continued to say that it was connected.

However, when attempting to repair connection I would receive the message "Can not renew IP Address."

I also looked at the properties, and noted a large gap in the packets.

Sent: 95
Received: 2

I rebooted the computer, and tried resetting the modem, but that wound up making the problem worse. Now the computer did acknowledge the lack of connection, though it was permanently in the "attempting to connect" stage.

There were also no packets being sent or received.

I tried many things, from resetting the router, modem, and computer all at once, to changing my static IP to a Dynamic one again.

And yet, no matter what I did, I could not connect.

I should also mention that I am behind a router, and I could not even connect to that. And yes, the wires and adapters were all correctly and firmly in their places.

I decided to look for help on the internet, and posted in a relatively low-level forum about it (as I had no reason to believe that it was a malware issue at the time). Even though the problem was not resolved (hence my appearance here), it was through the person that helped me's advice that I learned the cause of my troubles.

Under his guide, I was instructed to run ComboFix in Safe Mode. Yes, I was aware of the risks, I'm not entirely new to the program; I know what it can do when misused. I took what precautions I could and made sure to follow every instruction to the letter.

The result was ComboFix telling me it detected a rootkit by the name of ZeroAccess. It attempted to fix it, and said to run a second scan if it fails, since it is "tricky to remove," in the program's own words.

It rebooted, and, of course, did not work. Though it said it was removed successfully. I ran it a second time as instructed, and the result was the same (though it didn't find ZeroAccess this time).

At this point, the person who was helping me turned me over to BleepingComputer, as he had done all he can.

This is where I am now. Everything just stated was everything I did since this started. I've not left anything out.
Please help.

And there was an additional problem. The flash drive I have been using to transfer files has difficulty being stopped by the infected computer.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I can't do this since I don't have internet access to begin with.

Will this be a problem?

There was some difficulty in running ComboFix, but it eventually worked. Aside from, of course, the inability ot install the Recovery console.

So far, the computer appears to be exactly as it was when I last touched it (which was just before posting this), no better, no worse.

Here is the ComboFix scan.

Hello

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure "Include All Files" option remains checked.
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Hello

ok lets try this but also see if you can find a friend with XP that you can copy this file from afd.sys

I want you to download SP3 again from here - http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24

save it to a pen drive and move it to the infected computer

double click the file to run - it will install sp3 over the existing sp3

see if you can connect now and rerun system look for me and send me the report
