Hello Everyone,

So now the kids are old enough to use my Windows XP computer and sure enough, apparently they came across something very nasty.

Unfortunately when the infection revealed itself I did not write down the exact title of the thing. In general it was doing the fake scanner routine popping up all kinds of warnings, disabling task manager and so on. The executable for this thing consisted of a long series of seemingly random letters, which were apparently removed by Malwarebytes and FCleaner which I have managed to run since this thing arrived on my system.

However, I am having after effects that I don't know how to cope with and am not entirely sure my system is clean yet, which is where I could use some help.

When the malware took over, it changed my desktop to a sick looking purple color and managed to hide (or wipe out) all of my desktop icons. It has also hidden (but not wiped out) directory listings for everything on "My Computer." It also changed my startup programs (which now seem not to run even though they are listed in my startup folder still).

I tried doing a system restore, but none of the dates would restore according to Windows.

So, while the contents of my hard drive seem (thankfully) intact, I can't do much on my computer...any Help(!) would be most appreciated.

Bill in Wisconsin.
