Hi,

We have some sort of malware which I attributed to the Confickr worm because it blocked any site with microsoft.com in the url, or common security busting sites in the url (including this one!), but the issue was not found when I eventually managed to try tools to remove it.

We were using Kaspersky Internet Security, but this stopped working, and I now believe this was due to the malware getting on the system, because we have been unable to get it to work again despite several uninstalls and reinstalls with registry cleans etc. in between.

I have managed to whittle down to a process running at boot using the valid svchost.exe file but no extended instructions in the command line such that there are two versions showing in Task Manager, one legitimate, one not. This I established by using AutoRuns and ProcessManager of Sysinternals Suite, via which I can suspend the problematic version of the process, and delete one version of the problematic startup entry and edit the userinit back to it's original state.

However, I have no idea how to remove the process from running at boot and do not want to get us locked out of the system by deleting the svchost.exe file on the next reboot, but think that there is something else calling up the initial process in the first place.

Any ideas?

Below is a copy of the current Trend Micro HijackThis log, where the main thing you will notice that should not be there is where the UserInit entry contains the additional instruction pointing to jbaadiuj.exe which is a entry and process that keeps re-creating itself, and appears a few times in the log... and I have attached a copy of the StartupList also configured via HijackThis...[attachment=113779:startuplist 2011-12-12_1.txt]...

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/432022 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I will run and attach the DDS and Gmer logs as soon as possible.

I am unwell at present but been trying scanning and cleaning our system with Dr Web CureIt after someone mentioned trying MalwareBytes which found w32.Ramnet to remove only, which has managed to ease the problem such as enabling me to get to links with specified urls such as this one for now. However, it does occasionally cause a blue screen of death when trying to clean some elements, and our main user profile had become corrupted. Have not attempted to use the main user profile for now in case it causes the issue to return before full scanning/troubleshooting has completed.

I found my HTC was highly infected and the main culprit seems to be w32.ramnt.8 and Exploit.clkr or so.

My main concern is that the malware and backdoor trojan will return easily if it is still lurking. And that a complete reinstall so that I can get Kaspersky Internet Security and Spybot up and running again will only be re-infected by my full backup with varied files :s ???

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

We can do the following for now.

[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=D:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe,,D:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\bxlnsfls\jbaadiuj.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsWelcomeCenter] rundll32.exe oobefldr.dll,ShowWelcomeCenter
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [JbaAdiuj] D:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\bxlnsfls\jbaadiuj.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [JbaAdiuj] D:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\bxlnsfls\jbaadiuj.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - Startup: jbaadiuj.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Delete the folder in bold.
D:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\bxlnsfls

Restsart the computer normally.
==

Please run the DDS tool as previously requested and post the log.
It will give me more information os your system.

===

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Please post the logs and let me know what problem persists.

UPDATE:
The GMER crashes during use causing a blue screen of death reboot, else just freezes the whole system, I have not tried it in safe mode yet though?

QUESTION: If I re-install am I likely to be able to protect us from Ramnet etc. or will it be stuck in the boot process? (sorry, I'm still unwell).

I think you missed by previous post. Sent just before your last post.

I think you have a bad ZeroAccess infection.

Execute the instructions and please post the logs I requested.

Hi Nasdaq,

Indeed I didn't see your first response, sorry about that.

I went offline to carry out your instructions after downloading SecurityCheck having copied some of your instructions to a text file - am unable to print at present.

=======================================
I "fixed" the first 6 entries you listed which showed up with HijackThis. The last entry was no longer present since my troubleshooting but a different line was present which I included in the fix stage:

- ORIGINAL LINE - NOT PRESENT;
O4 - Startup: jbaadiuj.exe

- NEW LINE - INCLUDED IN FIX SELECTION;
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [JbaAdiuj] D:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\bxlnsfls\jbaadiuj.exe
=======================================

I then deleted (yet again!) the folder you mentioned (SHIFT + DEL) avoiding recycle bin.

Thus please find further posts for (1) HijackThis since reboot, (2) DDS since reboot with Attach included, and (3) Checkup since reboot via SecurityCheck.

The Welcome Center screen did not open on reboot.

Thanks.

The Welcome Center screen did not open on reboot.
I removed it. It's not required at each restart.

If you want it back do this.
Open HijackThis. In the bottom right click on Config | Backups then highlight O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsWelcomeCenter] rundll32.exe oobefldr.dll,ShowWelcomeCenter and click on restore

Hi again Nasdaq,

Thank you for replying again.

I don't require the Welcome Center screen at startup, but now just understand you removed it from doing so such that thi behaviour was normal.

I just hadn't had time/energy to add the Vista SP2, but had hoped to create a slipstreamed disc with it for all the reinstalling I have had to do for us this year. And yes, I noticed the Adobe Flash Player 10.xxx versions were not very good. I usually try to keep things up to date but alo some updates have messed up the system or being able to stream live NFL etc. Adobe Reader I think was hijacked by this infection. Java and Firefox are ones to get into the groove with. Also some updates were failing and leaving mess with the difficulties we have been having with our internet connection and rolling back but leaving traces. Modern Technology - Sometimes a pain.

So here is the ComboFix log as requested. Internet Explorer is not loading correctly so it might need a reinstall... actually I think it is working okay now since ComboFix what with loading the default home page which it was failing to do before, and was just also in full screen mode!
