After removing a number of infections using malwarebytes, spywarebot and main system PCTools my XP window with icons freezes either immediately or eventually. Tried going to setup on initial boot and putting the system back into default mode ameliorates the problem but eventually in comes back within a half hour or so.

If the computer is running without freezing in "Safe Mode" but freezing in normal windows, you could try to perform a "Clean Boot." If no freezing, then methodically start adding programs until the symtpoms reappear.

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
