Hello. Strange problem. I have a couple computers. A newer desktop with Win7 and an old desktop with XP Pro,
which I use just to play back the music that I have put on an external hard drive. A couple days ago I unhooked
every thing from the older pc. Plugged it back in and it will not find and
show the external usb hard drive. Some times when I plug in the external, it shows it and says it is ready to use,
but it does not show in disk management or in computer. When I bring it and plug it back in to my newer desk top, it
shows and works fine. I was told that if it would not show on the older pc, it would not show on the newer, regardless
but that is not the case.Remember, the external was working fine on the XP pc before I unhooked it and then hooked
every thing back up. Thank you all for any help.

You could assign the external hard drive a permanent drive letter, say "P", within windows 7 Disk Management.

Next, try the external drive in Windows XP and see if it recognizes it now.

Found the problem after several days trying to figure why my main pc would see the external and my
other pc would not after it had originally. The electric plug in I was plugging in to the pc from the
external enclosure was not supplying enough current. Thanks for the answers to my problem.
