Posted 11 December 2011 - 02:45 AM

I was told to post a new topic with these results. I have had Windows 7 Antispyware 2012 pop up several time in the last couple days. It always starts with Firefox closing and or attempting to open up 4 new windows that are composed of gibberish. Then the spyware will pop up and I am unable to execute any programs. After following the removal instructions at here, several times it keeps on coming back. Since it started I have been getting popup tabs in my internet browser and Mcaffee will warn me that it has removed a trojan named TDSS.cc repeatedly. I have ran and posted the results for Security Check, MiniToolBox, and MBAM. When I ran GMER it returned no log. I believe this is because I have a 64bit OS. Also after running MBAM after it last happened, upon restarting my computer required me to perform a check disk before it would start again. I appreciate whatever help you can give.

Here are the results of my DDS logs as requested.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/431816 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I am a little confused about the process here. This will be the third time I have posted my DDS report. I am afraid I am caught in some kind of bot cycle. I do have an update on my problems though. After the last time I had removed the virus, it went away for a few days. Then 2 days ago my computer randomly restarted on me and when it was starting back up it said it need to run the system startup repair tool because it was having issues. After letting it go through that it said that it failed to fix the problem. Then I proceeded to do a system restore, which it also said failed. Then my computer restarted again of its own accord and everything seemed fine. However my Firefox browser would not open and seemed to be bugged so I uninstalled it. Chrome worked just fine. Then I reinstalled a new version of Firefox. Now today when I got home it was on the start up repair screen again and I did a system restore to fix it. It actually worked but now Mcaffee is back to claiming that it is removing trojans. I haven't made any changes to my computer other than the Firefox thing because it was necessary for school.

Here is my current DDS log.

Hello Vladimus, and :welcome: to the Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.

I am oneof4, and I am here to help you!

  • I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
  • Please perform all steps in the order received and do not proceed if you need clarification.
  • Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems please stop and tell me about it. When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide you with detailed suggestions for prevention.
  • At the top right-center of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic. If you click on this, another page will open. Please choose Immediate Notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.
  • If after 5 days you have not replied to this topic, I will assume it has been abandoned, and I will close it.
  • I would also like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please be courteous and appreciative for the assistance provided!
  • Again I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so. Your computer fix will be based on the current condition of your computer! Any changes might delay my ability to help you.

==========

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. ZeroAccess

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you choose to continue with the cleaning process, please follow the next series of instructions.

==========

Going over your logs I noticed that you have uTorrent installed.
  • Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs.
  • They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a wide variety of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites.
  • Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.
  • The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications.
It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, you will get infected again.
I would recommend that you uninstall uTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

==========

When you ran DDS earlier, it should have produced two logs. You pasted the DDS.txt in your reply, but failed to include the "Attach.txt." Could you please see if it is still on your desktop, and paste it in your next reply.

==========

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not an option, Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

==========

NOTE: I notice that you have Daemon Tools installed on your system, this CD Emulation tool MUST be disabled so that ComboFix may run properly. Please read the following article, and follow the instructions given for running DeFogger:
Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Once you have run DeFogger, please follow the next set of instructions:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

Save it to your Desktop <-- Important!!!

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Please refer to this link for instructions.
  • Right click it and run as admin & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply, along with a description of how things are running.

==========

Things I need to see in your next reply:

  • Attach.txt
  • TDSSKiller Log
  • ComboFix.txt
  • How are things running now?

Best Regards,
oneof4.

Hey thanks for the really prompt reply. I haven't had time to do anything with my computer lately because of the holidays. I have decided to go ahead and reformat it. I have my important files backed up and its not worth the risk especially since every time I restart my computer Mcafee seems to find the TDSS.cc trojan and remove it. I ran the TDSS and it found nothing. I assume since I am doing a reformat you do not need any of the files. Is there anything I should do before I reformat it? I was going to contact DELL since they manufactured it and proceed from there.

Hey Vladimus, hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

You mention that your computer is a DELL, most dells have a "Restore" partition that can be used to return the pc to factory install state (the original configuration in which it was built). The following video takes you step-by-step through this process:

Restore Dell Recovery Partition

If you wish to contact Dell for assistance, that's not a bad option either.

Here are some recommendations to consider once you get back up and going:

Recommendations

Below are some recommendations to lower your chances of (re)infection.

  • Download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
Three good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are Avast!, Antivir and Microsoft Security Essentials
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
  • Install an Anti-Spyware program, and update it regularly
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.

SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.

  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

  • Keep your other software up to date as well. Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. Download Secunia Software Inspector to keep all your software up to date.
  • Consider Firefox as your primary browser. Its safer, fast and secure!
  • Install WOT. Never inadvertently surf to a dangerous website again.
  • Install NoScript. Pre-emptively blocks malicious scripts and allows JavaScript, Java and other potentially dangerous content only from sites you trust.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing . :(

I do not accept personal donations for assistance provided. I would ask that you instead consider donating the greatest gift - Organ Donation. Your organs are of no use to you when your gone. You will save a life that would otherwise be lost!
