Hello everybody! My Windows XP software was recently infected with the System Fix virus. I have done a few things that have stopped the "pop up" windows, but I have a feeling I am still infected. When opening a program like iTunes, it takes up to 5 minutes to launch. Streaming videos online freezes the computer for a little while. Also when opening folders such as "My Computer", I get the little flashlight icon for a few minuets before any of the folders appear. The computer is also just running slow in general, opening windows, etc. Here are a few things that I have tried already.

-RKill

I tried running this in safe mode, tried renaming the file, and also tried multiple download links. Every time I run RKill I get this message. "Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running"

-Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

This out of all of the programs has been the most effective, but still hasn't fixed the "slowness"

-Unhide

This helped get most of the icons back, but it still hasn't brought back all of them.

-Defrag

I've done this as well, I didn't see any difference afterwards.

I thought I'd post on here before I reload windows and start fresh, but I think thats even more of a PITA. Thank you in advance on your input.

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
    This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
    This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

You're not running any AV program.
Install one of these:
- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- free Microsoft Security Essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials
- free Comodo Antivirus: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/antivirus.php
Update, run full scan, report on any findings.

Then we have "hosts" file missing.

Open Notepad.
Paste the following text into it:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#  	102.54.94.97 	rhino.acme.com      	# source server
#   	38.25.63.10 	x.acme.com          	# x client host

127.0.0.1   	localhost

Go File>Save As and...

1. Name the file hosts. (no extension; make sure there is just a "dot" at the end <--- VERY IMPORTANT!)
2. Make sure, "Save as type:" is set to "All Files (*.*)
3. Make sure the file is saved to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder

Ok, I installed and ran Microsoft Security Essentials, which took quite awhile haha. Here is a screenshot of the results.

I added the "hosts." file. For whatever reason, the "." at the end doesn't show up in the file name when it is saved. I'm not sure if its supposed to do that or not.

Here are the results from the SystemLook program.

You did fine.

How is computer doing?

-Unhide

This helped get most of the icons back, but it still hasn't brought back all of them.

What is missing?

The last time I checked the folders in the start menu, there were a few empty ones, but they all seem to be back to normal.

The computer is still really slow especially opening some of the the bigger programs like iTunes. I don't know if there is anything else I can do?

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

After I ran the TFC, I noticed some of the files in the start menu dropped the ".exe" at the end, but other than that no difference.

ESET did not find any threats.

Any other ideas?

I really do appreciate your help, Broni.

Update Internet Explorer to version 8.

===============================================================

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

==========================================================================

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

I don't see much there.

Possibly your computer is not totally clean.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
