Hi thanks for any help in advance. Here is what I think has happened to my (no brand name) Windows XP pro version 2002 service pack 3 32 bit system with an Intel 3.2ghz processor. I got what I think was the Windows Recovery virus two months ago and thought I removed it with system restore. I started the computer up earlier this week and my home screen was blank. The startup menu was also blank except for the log off and turn off computer buttons. These two buttons were the only functions I could use. I rebooted with a Microsoft boot virus scan (MPAM-FE) cd I downloaded off of Microsoft’s website. Unfortunately I did not save the log from this virus scan because it discovered around 12 different malware programs running. Next I tried to follow the remove Windows Recovery thread by downloading RKILL which brought back some functions. Then I ran the Malwarebites scan which I will post below and the Unhide program. After the restart the virus took over again and I had to run Rkill and the Malwarebites scan again. This is where I am stuck. Every time I restart after the scan the same malware tries to hide functions. Also just a few other notes I have a huge number of temporary files which I assume are the hidden folders and I’ve noticed a large number of explorer.exe processes running in task manager before I run Rkill each time I restart. Below I will paste the Malwarebytes scan reports and the DDS text report. I will attach the other DDS log and the GMER log. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to computers as you have probably already noticed so forgive me if I have overlooked something. Thank you again for any help!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/431603 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hi,

My name is Casey and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Whilst I research the problems in your logs, it is very important that you do not make any changes to this PC. Specifically, do not run any further malware removal tools or try to remove anything yourself.

You may wish to "Watch Topic" so that you are immediately informed of any replies I make. I also ask that you reply to my posts within 5 days else your topic will be closed as stale.

Throughout the removal process, if you have any questions then you should ask them. If you are unsure of my instructions or something does not go as planned - then please tell me. Conversely, it is also important that you answer any questions I have and that you keep me updated on the state of the PC.

Regards,

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Download and run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. If you are prompted to install the Recovery Console, then please do so.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Note: If you have trouble running ComboFix, then please rename ComboFix.exe to Caseyboy.exe and re-run.

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Hi,

ComboFix deleted a legitimate folder, so let's restore that.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text below into it:
DeQuarantine::
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\WD

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Could you then delete you current ComboFix file and download a new copy of ComboFix and run that.

How is your PC running?

Casey

Casey,

I created the notepad document and dropped it into combofix.exe. It then asked me to update to a newer version of combofix.exe. I selected yes and let it update and then closed combofix after it updated. Then I dragged the document onto the updated version of combofix. Below is the log it produced. Do you still want me to delete this version and download a new one and run it? Currently the computer is running great even after I shut it down and start it back up. The processes running are back down to normal around 59. It seems the explorer.exe processes are gone on startup now. The only problem that I can find is in the start menu all the program files are empty including the administrative tools. Everything else in the start menu has been restored to normal I think. Thank You!

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Hi again,

Great, looks like ComboFix no longer deletes that legitimate folder :)

So your symptom is that your Start Menu is empty? The rogue you were infected with hides your start menu entries, usually, in a temporary directory. If that directory still existed when ComboFix was run, the items should have been restored, so unfortunately it seems as it no longer exists (maybe it was deleted by another tool). We will double check, but it will probably mean that we will have to manually fix your Start Menu.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    :dir
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp\smtmp
    %systemdrive%\Qoobox\Quarantine\temp

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Unfortunately, that means we'll have to do this manually.

:step1: You can restore the defaults for the Start Menu, Accessories and Administrative Tools as follows:
Posted Image
  • Then click on the Restore button.

:step2: To manually recreate "All Programs" entries, follow these steps...

  • Download App Paths
  • Double click on AppPaths.exe to run the program.
  • Keep the program open.

In this example I'll recreate an entry for Avast antivirus program.
  • Go Start>All Programs.
  • Right click on Avast entry, click "Properties".

Posted Image
NOTE. Make sure, you right click on Avast program, NOT on Avast folder.

  • You'll see this window:

Posted Image

Due to the damage caused by the infection, you'll find "Target" box empty.

  • Go back to AppPaths window and find Avast entry.
  • Right click on Avast line, click "Edit".
  • A pop-up window will open:

Posted Image

  • Highlight everything in "Path" box, right click on it, click "Copy"
  • Go back to Avast "Properties" window, right click inside "Target" box, click "Paste".
  • IMPORTANT! Add quotation marks at the beginning of the path and at the end
  • Click OK and you're done.

In case, program's link shows as (empty):

Posted Image

  • Open Windows Explorer, navigate to Avast folder in Program Files
  • Right click on Avast ".exe" file, click "Create shortcut":

Posted Image

  • Copy that shortcut, go back to Start menu.
  • Right click on avast!Free Antivirus, click "Paste".
  • You'll see Avast shortcut recreated replacing (empty) entry.

Alternatively....
...you paste that shortcut in:
(XP) - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Avast
(Vista/7) - C:\Program Data\Start Menu\Programs\Avast

Hi Casey,

Well that was easily the most time consuming fix so far but I think I have the start menu pretty much back to normal. As far as I can tell the computer is running like new. Unless you saw something else that needs to be fixed. A couple questions 1.Do you suggest I upgrade to windows 7? 2.I was wondering what programs you could suggest so this kind of thing doesn't happen again? By the way you guys are saints for doing this for free! I can't thank you enough! If you guys accept donations please tell me where to go because I promise I'll be back asking for more help before long.

Mike
