Hi,

On Monday my TrendMirco Anti-Virus software expired(I thought I had 10 more days), on Tuesday I got a virus. Out of nowhere my internet browser shut down, and program deletion pop ups overtook my screen. I immediately did a hard shut down to avoid too much damage(dont' know that I did), and when I started the comp back up in Safe Mode, almost all program desktop items were gone as well as all the shortcuts and links in the Start menu. I ran the TrendMicro scan as well as a free online scan from the Microsoft website that said it found 2 trojans. I didn't think to write them down at all so I don't know the names. I then found this site yesterday and started trying to follow some of the instructions about getting rid of this. I ran a Hijackthis report which kept shutting down due to something about host writing abilities, even though I'm logged in as an admin. I've also ran Malwarebytes three times. The first time I ran it, the program found 2 viruses or something and after I restarted the computer I was able to see the "computer" shortcut in the Start Menu. The second time I ran it, the program crashed, and the third time it found nothing. I also tried running Rkill as I kept seeing a pop up in the lower right programs tab about windows security problems, and that has since gone away. After running Rkill though, I tried running Malwarebytes again(second time I ran it), and what took 10 minutes to do before(scan through 111000 files) took 8 hours the second time. The computer then froze up, I had to hard boot it again, ran Malwarbytes(3rd time) and it got the whole scan done in 45 min. I've saved those logs which will be posted below.

I tried following the directions on the "Preparation Guide" page, though it wouldn't even action a download for the DDS and when I tried to download the GMER zip and run it, the program was terminated due to a "Windows" problem. When I tried to download the .exe file, I got a blue screen that I could see for 1 min, said something about a fatal error that then shut my entire computer down. At this point, I give up and have no idea what to do. Can someone please help me? Thank you!

BTW, I have Windows Vista.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/431563 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I ran combofix. The Documents, Pictures, Music, Computer, Network, Control Panel, and Help and Support tabs all came back to the Start Menu. Looks like most of the start up icons are gone from the lower right hand portion of the taskbar, and there's what looks like a Windows security icon there. Also, most desktop programs are still gone. Combofix log is below.

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

I don't have that icon saved anywhere on my computer and it won't let me save it to my computer either. Any suggestions on what I can do? I'm using Chrome btw.

Hey Gringo,

I'm sending this from my brother's computer as I can't use the infected computer at this time. I ran the script as advised, and it seemed to be running fine. It said it found corrupted files, and was goin' to restore, said it was restored, then restarted the computer. When the computer came back up however, it first gave a pop up in the lower left corner, that said;

PEV.exe- Corrupt File
The file or directory C:\$Mft is corrupt and unreadable.
Please run the Chkdsk utility.

After that popped up, the combofix screen showed the following with an error message that said;

"Almost done. . This window will close in a short while
Please wait a few seconds for the report log to pop up

ComboFix's log shall be located at C:\COMBOFIX.TXT
SED: can't read catchlog: No such file or directory
SED: can't read catchlog: No such file or directory

The computer screen then went to a highlighted black after about 25 minutes, where it's acting like it's going to sleep, but the computer stays running, although, it doesn't seem to be processing anything. Should I just hard boot it and restart the scan? I also have pics I took with my cell phone of the above errors if you want me to attach them. It says not to attach anything in your signature so I didn't.

I restarted it and it ran Check Disk on the start up, and then booted normally after it ran Check Disk.

Hey Gringo,

I tried running it again, and it hit some error and the computer crashed, restarted itself and ran Check Disk again. When it finally booted up, it froze before I could do anything. I hard booted it again, and was then able to run the script. Still don't have the desktop programs that I used to have on there, and not sure if I'll just need to put them back there manually, or if there's still something infected or hidden.

The first thing I would like you to do is run this for me - http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe after it is complete restart the computer and continue with these steps

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.

  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    %TEMP%\smtmp\*.* /s

  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here

No problems came about while running that script. I do keep noticing there's a Windows security window that keeps popping up saying my computer may be at risk, and there's one that says that Windows is blocking programs at the startup, but when I right click on it, and hover over the "run blocked program" it just has Malwarebytes listed, so I don't think that's actually an issue is it?
