I recently noticed a marked difference in performance of my laptop (archaic hand-me-down as it is, it just needs to get me through to next year). I did the typical sspybot S&D, and a couple other things to no avail. Then, I started sifting through the processes, services, startup, etc. and noticed the spigot file (with which I was not familiar). The following is just a record of what I did today along with the logs. I'll be able to reply to additional questions within 24-36hr generally.

Thanks in advance! This site is awesome, by the way!
--------------------------------------

I noticed the Spigot file on the startup tab of msconfig. I unchecked that along with a few updaters that were annoying me anyway. Then I found this website and it looked like the best shot I had at a way to get rid of problems while avoiding gimmicky software.
-----
Restarted PC
-----
Disconnected from internet (disabled Intel PROset radio).
-----
Decided to disable Trend Micro OfficeScan before proceeding by doing the following...
Start->run-> cmd
Command = "net stop tmlisten"
Report = The OfficeScan NT Listener service was stopped successfully
Command = "net stop ntrtscan"
Report = The OfficeScan NT RealTime Scan service could not be stopped
Command = "net stop ntrtscan"
Report = The OfficeScan NT RealTime Scan service is not started. <br> More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521.
The systray icon went red indicating the scan service had been stopped. I assumed it stopped despite the previous message.
Exited command prompt window.
Then I continued, following the instructions on the webpage...

Update and clarification...

OK, so apparently if I had entered a better variety of terms into a web search I would have come up with the conclusion that it's the remnant of some old toolbar I must've deleted when I inherited this laptop.

By the way, I never properly entered the startup item. I apologize. Item = "SearchSettings"; Command = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Spigot\Search Settings\SearchSettings.exe.

According to the Dealio/Spigot website (http://www.spigot.com/remove-search-settings.html), it's a very easily removed program. However, it doesn't show up when the control panel add/remove list is populated. I'm not trying to imply they're being malicious - just pointing out the glitch on my PC. So maybe it's part of the problem or maybe not. It's just strange that, having not downloaded/installed any programs recently, that there should be such a sudden change. I wonder if I have a hiccup in the registry I should fix.

Anyway, thanks again to those who have any advice, based on the post above (and likewise if the advice turns out to be "don't worry about it, your laptop just sucks").

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

Thanks for the help Gringo! You guys rock for having a site like this. The requested Combofix log is below. Since I last posted, I removed the pdfforge toolbar program from my laptop (sorry - did so before you instructed me to do nothing - just wanted to let you know as FYI) b/c it seems to be packed with marketing software (i.e. Spigot). At any rate, when I saw your reply, I followed the directions, Combofix ran without a hitch, and I rebooted thereafter. I wasn't actually expecting a marked improvement (especially given the relatively low yield on the log - though I certainly could be missing something), but something worked (so far, anyway). I'll let you know if things start to tank and I'll check for replies to see if you need anything else from me.
Thanks again!

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Hey Gringo. Sorry I didn't get back to you in 48hr. I figured we were done here since you helped me. Thanks for the followup (glad you found a few more things, b/c the machine's still groggy but much more tolerable than it was - this may clear up additional problems). I'll run and post the script asap.

Gringo -

Thanks again for the help. I copied the text, "ClearJavaCache::", into notepad, removed the space before and double space after the text, and named it "CFScript.txt". I disabled trend antivirus, disabled CD Emulators using Defogger, and disabled wifi. Then, when I dragged it to the ComboFix icon, ComboFix started and then froze with the last few lines displaying as follows...
---
---
Extract: pv_5_2_2.zip
Extract: streamtools.zip
Output folder: C:\32788R22FWJFW\N_
Output folder: C:\32788R22FWJFW
---
---
I saved a screenshot of the above if you would like it attached. Combofix did this a couple of times and then I rebooted in safe mode and tried again. This time ComboFix told me that I still had antivirus software running. When I used the command prompt to disable trend office scan again, it (being the command report/line) told me that it was already disabled. I selected the option not to continue with ComboFix at that time. So, I thought that maybe my conclusion/instinct was wrong that removing the spaces "ClearJavaCache::" would negate the command line. Thus, I made it " ClearJavaCache:: " and tried again. This time ComboFix ran but popped up the warning that it was doing so under reduced functionality. The following is the log that resulted....

Hello

Juat stay with me untill I say we are done OK

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore just move to the next item on the list.

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
Java™ 6 Update 26
Viewpoint Media Player

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]
Install Java:

Please go here to install Java

  • click on the Free Java Download Button
  • click on Agree and start Free download
  • click on Run
  • click on run again
  • click on install
  • when install is complete click on close

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)

  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

If you have problems running Hijackthis.

sometimes we have to run it like this To run HijackThis as an administrator,
rightclick HijackThis.exe (located: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exe)
and select to run as administrator

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM

Gringo -

Thanks again for the help. Since running the last ComboFix and reinstalling Java & Adobe Reader, the laptop's gotten a bit more sluggish again (but still better than before after a slow period following boot). I have downloaded but not run Malwarebytes. I haven't yet downloaded TFC, because Trend Micro OfficeScan was not happy about the website and disallowed (flashed up a warning page on browser instead of taking me through to your link) access while I was at the university. Anyway, the next step is downloading & running TFC...

Before continuing I have just a couple of quick questions...
1. I got a little concerned about the oldtimer version of TFC because of the aforementioned warning from Trend, and also because of some posts like the following: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/271187-ran-temp-file-cleaner-from-malware-clening-guidenow-win-xp-doesent-st/
So, I just wanted to double check with you that you thought this was the best website and software version for the job. I'm happy to follow advice, but I just wanted to double check with you that I should go ahead and disable Trend for the download & install of TFC.

2. I noticed another site offering TFC (or at least a program by the same title) with fairly recent changes to some previous bugs in the logfile: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Temp-File-Cleaner.shtml
Should I still stick with the link you provided?

For now I'm just going to backup my PC onto an external drive, and I'll be sure not to take any other actions, until your reply.

Thanks again!

Hello

the antivirus companys are always going after our tools because of what they can do - trend is not stopping the download because of TFC it is denying access to the web page because of other tools that are hosted there

Now you don't have to run the temp file cleaner but I like doing it as one it will remove a lot of files that won't have to be scanned - so makeing the scan faster.

Now the topic you link to is an isolated event and can and does happen with any software in the world

Gringo -

The computer seems to be doing fine now. As far as recent problems... Trend Micro OfficeScan has been intermittently offline/unloaded (of which I was notified by Windows Security Center). I updated Trend, and have not noticed the problem on last reboot (I was looking over the logs and noticed I forgot to unload OfficeScan before running MBAM & HijackThis - hope it's not a big deal). I also noticed a lot of 0KB files showing up during the backup process (using Memeo) before I ran TFC (more of an FYI than anything). TFC is a NICE program, by the way. Thanks for the suggestion and explanation! The only other problem that I had was that the MBAM installer froze while extracting files. I downloaded the installer again and the problem was resolved. Since running the last 3 steps (TFC, MBAM, & HijackThis) I have not noticed any significant hangups/problems. I'll let you know if that changes, as always. Seriously, you guys provide an amazing service -- Lots of respect!

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded start-up entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

If you have any problems running Hijackthis see NOTE** below (Host file not read, blank notepad ...)

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] stsystra.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Default Manager] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\Default Manager\DefMgr.exe" -resume
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start

      O4 - Global Startup: QuickBooks Update Agent.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate\qbupdate.exe
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brackets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

NOTE**
sometimes we have to run it like this To run HijackThis as an administrator, right-click HijackThis.exe
(located: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exe)<--32bit
(located: C:\Program Files(86)\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exe)<--64bit
and select to run as administrator

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scanner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click on copy to clipboard and paste the results here in this topic
  • you may also find here C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Gringo -

The first reboot after HiJackThis fix & ESET scan was a bit sluggish (relative to the startup before), but leaps and bounds ahead of where it was when I initially posted. For a little while (a couple minutes) after startup, the CPU & PF usage was a bit high, but soon settled. Current speed (after initial boot lag subsided) is pretty darn good for this machine. So, much appreciation!! The ESET scan results and log are below. It looks like the biggest complaint from the scan was the Uniblue Registry Booster. It kind of makes me wonder if that program is more trouble (i.e. background processes) than it's worth.
