Hello BC

I have a virus that's spread to all three computers (2laptops 1desktop) in our computer network. Originally my computer was redirecting but after getting assistance from Budapest that stopped. The situation got worse when I used a USB drive on my laptop from the desktop computer. Once I plugged it in it showed a folder that said recycler and the kaspersky anti-virus gave the warning that I had a worm and it could not be removed. Then the screen turned blue and the computer restarted.

Since then I've run the Mini Tool Box, Malware Bytes, Super Anti Spyware, ESET scanner, TDSS killer, and kaspersky. None have found the virus. The ESET scanner listed my registry booster as a virus but after I removed the program the computer still runs slow. It also freezes, gives a blue screen and restarts when using programs and 404 bad gateway when using the internet.

Below is my DDS txt and attached is my Ark.txt I'll post the same for the other two computers in a separate entry.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/431423 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

First of all, lets see if your drive's MBR is infected. Due to the way the latest variant works, the only way we can determine this for sure, is with an offline dump.

Try this please. You will need a USB drive.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • Gently tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type the following and press enter:

    dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1

  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a file will be located on your USB drive named mbr.bin
  • Remove the USB drive and insert it back in your working computer and navigate to mbr.bin, zip it up and attach it to your next reply.

This will allow me to have a look at the MasterBootRecord of your drive and see if it is infected.

regards, Elise

once the disk gets past the Welcome to xPUD screen it turns white and orange with flickering lines. I can't get it to Press File. I've burned two extra disks and tried but it does the same thing.

Most likely your display driver is not included.

Try to boot from a ubuntu live CD (follow step 3: Try It!)

Once the Ubuntu desktop is loaded, click the top icon in the left panel. A search box will open. Type terminal and click on the first Terminal icon that will be displayed. This will open a command prompt window.

Type the following line and press enter.

sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1

Close the terminal window.
Now click the third icon from the top in the left panel (Home Folder). You will see some folders there, as well as the mbr.bin file we just created. Right click this file and select Copy.
Now in the Home window look under Devices in the top/left corner.
You should see there System Reserved and one indicating your Windows partition (<size of windows partition> File System). Click on the latter and you'll see in the right part the contents of your windows partition.

Right click in an empty space in that window and select Paste. This will copy mbr.bin to c:\ (in Windows).

Restart in Windows and right click c:\mbr.bin > Send to > Zipped (compressed) file. This will create mbr.zip in the same location. Attach this file to your next reply.

regards, Elise

The laptop I was using to download the ubuntu cd is still showing signs of infection so i'm unable to complete the download yet. Once the B.C. expert reply's on how to resolve this matter i will download the ubuntu and post the log. Below is a copy of the msg posted about the desktop computer.

The computer is not just slow it will not complete downloads. I tried to download ubuntu live CD to use on the other infected computer but my computer will not complete the download. First it says the download will take 7hours then it drops down to 4hours and remains there. The download only gets 50% - 58% complete before it says

C:\Documents and Settings\tv\My Documents\Downloads\ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

I need this computer to work so I can fix the others. What can be done?

That indicates more likely a connection problem. This file is very large and if your connection drops halfway, you need to start over unfortunately. This is why I prefer using xPUD. It is however a lot more limited (Ubuntu comes with more drivers, which are needed for your display).

Hello again, that is clean fortunately.

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

1st when the computer restarted it went to BIOS screen where I had to press F1 to continue or DEL to enter set-up. I had to enable mouse and keyboard cause the system had them disabled. Once the PC was running it freezes when running programs like adobe audition or adobe premiere pro. Also when I connect to the internet it redirects to other sites. If I type in Bleeping computer it sends me to kaspersky. Once I try to go to the kaspersky download page or support page it says 404 page not found. It does the same for other site as well.

I downloaded TDSS Killer on the laptop and run it on the PC but it found nothing. The Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 updated and has been giving me a false positive since the reboot. I also re-ran the ESET and Malware Bytes but they all find nothing. Aside from a complete re-installation which I'm trying to avoid...what can be done?

Can you please rerun DDS and post me attach.txt (it will be minimized when the scan is finished)?

regards, Elise
