Windows XP SP 3, IE8

I was scanning my hard drive for viruses and noticed the anti-virus product (ESET NOD32) was taking a long time in folders
in CONTENT.IE5 (under my id's TemporaryInternetFiles). When I started digging around, some of the folders (which have
names like BXBAG455) appeared to have over 100,000 files in them. I regularly clean my cache out (limit is set to 75Mb),
why are there so many files in these folders and why aren't these folders being maintained automatically?
