My desktop computer uses XP, and it is 64 bit.

Malware Bytes is constantly saying it has blocked an outgoing IP from connecting to websites. Random IP addresses will show up, which makes me wonder if I have a virus.

However when I downloaded D.D.S. I made sure to disable all firewalls, antivirus etc. (I use NOD32, and SuperAntispyware and Malware Bytes) so all of them were disabled, yet DDS will only scan 3/4th of the way through and stop.

In the instructions it says This scan should not take longer than three minutes to complete, and I have waited over 30 minutes without it moving past the 3/4th mark. To be specific, the scan stops right at the "it" in "Post the contents of the logfile to the forum where IT was requested."

When I try to close the DDS program, it does not close, even with a CTRL ALT DELETE. I have to manually shut down the computer by holding the power button. Otherwise it doesn't turn off. Even minimizing the DDS screen immediately brings it back up on the screen.

As far as GMER goes, the instructions stated it only works for 32 bit, is there anything like it that is used for 64 bit computers?

Any help as to what is going on, would be much appreciated, thank you.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/431216 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

My desktop computer information:

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition

Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Computer:
AMD Atholon ™ 64 Processor
3500+
2.19 GHz, 960 MB RAM

I do not have an original Windows CD.

As far as GMER goes, the instructions stated it only works for 32 bit so I am afraid I'm out of luck on that too.

Any help as to what is going on, would be much appreciated, thank you.

P.S: I have attempted to scan with DDS again as per the Bot's instructions, but with the same 3/4th scan freeze.

I did not encounter any problems with running either program. I noticed in OTL under File Scan: That the file age can be changed past 30 days, up to 365 days. I followed your instructions carefully and only did 30 days, but I am wondering if an older file age setting may prove useful?

I recently had the Malwarebytes Pro version activated where it does real time protection, and that is when I noticed it was blocking seemingly malicious outgoing IP addresses to random websites. So I speculate that this issue may have gone well beyond 30 days ago, but I only became aware recently.

So based on this info, if you feel I should rescan again but at a much older file age, I would be happy to do so!

Here is my OTL log:

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

The combofix program did not work unfortunately. I had disabled my antivirus/firewall etc. and it said "autoscan" and the blue window did open but an hour later no progress.

Upon investigating what combofix was, I noticed that it works with 32 bit processors, however my computer is a 64 bit processor.

Perhaps that is why it isn't scanning?

Hello

It works now for 64 bit windows - it is the virus fighting back

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Thank you for clarifying about Combofix. If you would like me to scan with Combofix in safemode, or leave it scanning for more than an hour in hopes that it may start working I'd be happy to do so.

I scanned using TDSSKiller. It did not require a reboot. I am posting the log file according to your instructions.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

I tried to run ComboFix in safemode, but it keeps detecting ESET Smart Security 4.2 real time protection is still running..

Under processes however I have not found any trace of ESET to end process. I looked up the situation and found someone with a similar issue who posted on bleepingcomputer at this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic276097.html

I then pressed "OK" to scan anyways, and another warning came up saying:

Antivirus: ESET Smart Security 4.2
The above real time scanner(s) are still active but ComboFix shall continue to run. Kindly note that this is at your own risk.

At this point I tried to close out the window (rather than pressing ok) but it started to do its scan.

Then it stated as usual that Recovery console was not detected, so I could choose to update. I went ahead (as I did when not in safemode), except this time it failed because internet was not connected due to being in safemode.

I then tried to connect internet but that does not seem to be working for me when in safemode.
ComboFix then said it will scan for malware anyways, however I got the impression that without the recovery console it won't really do a proper scan).

The blue screen then came up, but no scan took place, and I closed the window at the 20 minute mark (Due to no movement)

Any advice on how to disable ESET realtime protection or how to connect the internet in safemode?

I entered safemode with networking, and ComboFix was able to update the Recovery Console. It once again said that ESET was running and warned me that I could continue at my own risk.

The blue window opened, but no progress happened. I waited around 1 hour just in case there may be some movement.

I am concerned why ESET is detected running when I cannot even find it in my active processes.

Perhaps it is interfering with the scan and I should uninstall ESET NOD32 and try again?

I am currently typing to you from my laptop (My desktop is infected). I am afraid to shut the computer down by pressing the power button, as I have heard doing this could mess the computer up.

I am not able to shut down the computer normally, nor am I able to close ComboFix. I will keep the desktop on with ComboFix open till I receive your next instructions.

Additional Information:

The current processes running in Safemode with Networking are:

taskmgr.exe
SASCORE.EXE (Seems to be from superantispyware program, when ending, it reappears immediately)
CF8165.3XE (not sure what this one is)
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
