I'm getting pop ups for both WinFixer and WinAntiVirus. I've ran Ad-aware SE, Spyware Doctor, Spybot S&D, VundoFix, VirtumundoBeGone, and FixVundo. Although it seems these have helped some, I am still getting some pop ups. Below is my HiJackThis Log:

Hi and welcome to Bleeping .

Configure Windows to Show all hidden files & folders and ensure you're familiar with rebooting into Safe Mode.

Before we do any cleaning, lets check for the new Vundo rootkit.

Download F-Secure's BlackLight to your desktop.

Double-click blbeta.exe

Click Scan and then Next when it's finished scanning.

Let Blacklight rename any malicious files it finds apart from "wbemtest.exe" which is legitimate.

The tool will ask if you want to reboot, choose Yes.

As your machine starts to load up again, start tapping the F8 key and go straight into Safe Mode.

Now scan with HijackThis again and place a check before the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://bigbr.cc?u=1538 (obfuscated)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://bigbr.cc?u=1538 (obfuscated)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

F1 - win.ini: run=fntldr.exe

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

O19 - User stylesheet: (file missing)

Close ALL OTHER OPEN WINDOWS and click "Fix Checked"

Now use the Windows search function and run a search for fntldr.exe. You may not find it but delete it if you do.

Reboot the machine and post a fresh HiackThis log and fsbl.log which you'll find on your desktop. :flowers:

Your log is clean now.

Have the popups stopped?

Did you find that file at all?

I haven't had any pop ups since I followed your instructions. I could not find the fntldr.exe file. I searched several times using the windows search tool. I had the settings to search C: drive, search system folders, search hidden files and folders, and search subfolders but nothing showed up.

Once again, thank you very much for your help. If you weren't in Liverpool, I'd offer to take you out to lunch to repay you. If I start running into pop ups again, I'll reply to this post.

I'm glad it's sorted.

If you weren't in Liverpool, I'd offer to take you out to lunch to repay you.

Don't you like Liverpool? :flowers:

Everything appears to be in order so I guess we can wrap things up for the time being.

Let me know if the problems return.

Now that you're clean again, please follow these simple steps to keep yourself safe and secure in the future.

Re-enable Your Protection

If asked to reveal your hidden system files and folders during the course of the fix, please rehide those now by reversing the steps here.

Please also re-enable the real-time protection for any anti-spyware programs I asked you to disable before proceeding with the fix.

Disable and Re-enable System Restore to Flush Infected Restore Points

If you are using Windows ME or XP, you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in your restore points.

You can find instructions on how to disable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

or

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

Re-enable System Restore with instructions from the tutorial above and create a new Restore point.

Block Access to Untrustworthy Sites

You can prevent your computer from visiting a myriad of untrustworthy sites and ad-servers by installing a customised hosts file. One of the best available is the MVPS Hosts File. Simply follow the instructions to install the file in the correct location. This will not only make surfing safer but will improve website load times and block popups from many of the large ad-servers.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Safe Surfing

Well John, good news and bad news. The good news is that Liverpool is pretty cool from what I hear, it's just too far away. The bad news is I got another popup for WinAntiVirus.

It says:

Notice: If your computer has been running slower than normal...blah, blah, blah...Download WinAntiVirus Free now.

Then there is "ok" and "cancel". Also in the bottom right hand corner is a very small internet explorer window which cannot be maximized or closed. When you choose "cancel" or try to close the "warning", the small window maximizes to a full window. I hope that made sense.

Here is a current HiJackThis log:

Download the trial version of Ewido Anti-Malware from here.
  • When installing Ewido, under "Additonal Options" uncheck "Install Background Guard" and "Install Scan Via Context Menu".
  • Launch Ewido by double-clicking the desktop icon and click 'OK' at the "Database could not be found!" warning.
  • Click "Update" on the left side of the main screen to update the definitions file.
  • Then click "Start Update".
  • When you receive the "Update successful" prompt, click on Scanner.
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • Warning: Do NOT open any other windows or your Control Panel while scanning as it may prevent scan completion!!
  • When prompted to clean the first infection, select "Remove" and checkmark the box beside "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner.
  • Upon scan completion, click the Save report button and save the report.txt to your desktop.
  • Then close Ewido and post the scan report please.

Popups still coming?

If so, download WinPFind.zip from here and unzip it to your C:\ folder. to create C:\WinPFind.
  • Important! Reboot in Safe Mode
  • Double-click WinPFind.exe inside c:\WinPFind to launch the program.
  • Click Configure Scan Options.
  • Place a check in Run Add-On's on the right and in all 5 options beneath it.
  • Click Apply and then Start Scan.
  • This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient. It can take upwards to 30 minutes sometimes.
  • When finished, it will show the results of the scan.
  • Click the Copy to Clipboard button and save them to notepad for posting in your next reply with a fresh HJT log.

I need you to check out some files for me please.

Go to Jotti's Malware Scan.

Paste the filepaths below into the box at the top one by one and hit Submit to upload them for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\admparsel.dll
C:\WINDOWS\cc.exe

Save the results to notepad and post them in your next reply if the scanner detects anything.

Open Notepad, (Start | Run, type Notepad)
Click Format from the notepad menu and ensure "Word Wrap" is NOT selected.
Copy ALL the quoted text below to Notepad.
Click File | Save As
Change the Save as type to *All Files*
Save it to your desktop as fix.reg

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\System]

Double click fix.reg and confirm you wish to add the contents to the registry.

If you receive an error while merging that the file isn't a registry file, you didn't change the Save as type to *All Files* !

Can you post the remainder of the WinPFind log please. If you look at your last post, it was cut short.

John, whenever i try to add the fix.reg file, it says "cannot import C:\documents and settings\pam\fix.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor. As far as the scans, here they are:

Jotti's malware scan 2.99-TRANSITION_TO_3.00

File to upload & scan:

Service load: 0% 100%

File: admparsel.dll
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.)

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all.

Something funny happened though.......the cc.exe file saved onto to the desktop as cc.exe, not as a text file......it will not let me delete it........

I'm still suspicious of those files. Can you navigate to the files, right click on each and select Properties. Look on the Summary tab and let me know what vendor information (if any) is disclosed.

We'll deal with the desktop cc.exe in a moment.
