Greetings.

Last week I was hit with some malware that caused many script error messages to pop up, files were hidden and background was reset. A combination of system restore and unhide.exe seemed to fix the issue; however I was now encountering search engine redirects. In addition, IE was being phantom hijacked (even when it was "closed" it was running, with the telltale signs of an audio advertisement playing from one of the sites it was redirecting too and recently searched websites appearing in IE9 startup window).

In an attempt to remove the potential rootkit from my 64-bit Windows 7 OS, I downloaded TDSSkiller but was unable to run it, even after renaming the file and installing it from a flash drive. Thus, I downloaded fixTDSS and ran it, where it found and cleared an infected MBR. Upon restarting my computer, I am met with the windows error recovery black screen. Startup repair has been unable to fix the issue, and using system restore hasn't yielded any change either.

Assistance with this problem would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, please restart your computer and tap the F10 key until the Edit Boot Options screen comes up.

Please let me know what is listed within the brackets ([.... ]).

regards, Elise

Okay, please do these steps again and delete the /MININT part.
(it should now read [ /NOEECUTE=OPTIN)

Press enter to confirm and restart your computer. Does it boot now?

Be careful not to change anything else! Only remove the /minint part.

regards, Elise

I deleted the /MININT part and the computer booted successfully! Upon opening I was greeted with a message saying that the system restore I had attempted in the windows recovery environment completed successfully. The system has been restored to 12/2/2011 5:09:51 AM. This was before I ran FixTDSS, but after encountering the search engine redirect issues.

Good to hear that! :)

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

regards, Elise

Hi again, please post me also attach.txt created by DDS.

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

regards, Elise

After running Combofix, the computer restarted; however after the restart I'm back to the startup repair black screen. Startup repair was unsuccessful in fixing the issue, and is now asking if I would like to use an irreversible system restore.

Unfortunately when Combofix shut the computer off I lost the attach file from DDS. I will try to recover it upon getting back to Windows. This baddie is being stubborn!

That is strange, do you remember combofix deleting anything in particular?

Can you first of all check the Boot Menu and see if the /minint switch somehow got put back?

Although ComboFix did delete some things, they weren't up on the screen too long to decipher what they were.

Indeed, the /MININT is back.

Please remove the /minint switch and restart your computer.

When it comes up, post me the log at c:\combofix.txt (if combofix runs on reboot, let it run until it produces the log).

When done, restart your computer twice and see if it reboots normally in Windows both times.

regards, Elise

Here is the ComboFix log that it ran from before. Combofix did not run upon startup.

ComboFix 11-12-04.03 - Michael 12/03/2011 21:44:39.1.4 - x64
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 6.1.7600.0.1252.1.1033.18.3893.2123 [GMT -5:00]
Running from: C:\Users\Michael\Downloads\ComboFix.exe
AV: avast! Antivirus *Disabled/Updated* {2B2D1395-420B-D5C9-657E-930FE358FC3C}
SP: avast! Antivirus *Disabled/Updated* {904CF271-6431-DA47-5FCE-A87D98DFB681}
SP: Windows Defender *Disabled/Updated* {D68DDC3A-831F-4fae-9E44-DA132C1ACF46}

Clearly this is not the full log from that actual run, I'm not sure what happened to it.

After shutting down the computer twice, both times when turned on again the system repair black screen popped up. It appears I have to manually delete the /MININT switch manually every time the computer is turned on.

That means that most likely something present on your computer is doing this. To determine what is doing this, lets do a more detailed scan.

OTL
-----
Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
