Hello... let me start by apologizing. Before I found this forum I tried to remove it myself. I started by running Microsoft Security Essentials which informed me that it had found rootkit.somethingsomething (it disappeared so fast I couldn't see the rest of the name) and that it was a very dangerous program. MS Security Essentials then shut down and wouldn't restart. I started researching this problem and found another site saying to run Combofix.exe, which I did. It did not completely remove this Malware, Trojan, whatever it is. I think found this site and have since followed the instructions posted to receive help. So, I'm sorry in advance if me running these programs messed up anything.

Problems started with me receiving notifications that Internet Explorer wasn't my default browser and did I want to make it default. I use Firefox so selected no. Kept getting this popup but was not running Internet Explorer and no visible windows open. Then computer slowed down significantly and looking at task manager showed me ping.exe was taking up 80% of my resources. Stopped this process. Also noticed several iexplorer.exe's running in processes. Stopped them and they would restart. Also noticed several instances of strange processes running that did not look familiar. Stopped them, they all restarted. Researching Ping.exe lead me to suspect Malware and start running the scans. I believe this all started last night when I noticed I was redirected in Firefox.

============= FINISH: 19:36:59.15 ===============

I'm having trouble with the Ark.txt file. GMER started out fine but then I received pop-ups saying "GMER hasn't finished scanning yet. Dou you want to abort the scan ?" with the misspelling and bad spacing and all. I select "no" on the popup and it immediately pops up again. I moved these popups (3 open at a time) out of the GMER window and select "no" then they closed. GMER continued running but did not post anything else in the log window. Another hour into the scan and got the popups again. This time the GMER window is no longer visible. Don't know if it's still running or not but can not close the popup windows. Also, receiving "Internet Explorer is not your default browser" popup again. Not sure if GMER is still running but if it ever makes a log file I'll upload it. It is not showing up in Task Manager as a running application and it is showing 0 CPU usage in processes.... and as I finish writing this, GMER is done... went to create Ark.txt file and GMER closed on it's own. Task Manager showing multiple instances of iexplorer.exe again. sigh...

When I first had the trouble with GMER, I took a screen shot so that's all I have. I'm attaching it here. It does show the only items that were posted in the window throughout the scan, nothing else was entered after this image was taken.

Might as well post the combofix log as well...

I just found your removal guides and, in particular, your tdss removal guide and I'm going to try those steps first before using you guys' precious time. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks!

Hi again... I hope someone will get to help me with this pretty soon but I've done a lot and think I may have cleaned my system. I'd really like someone to look at my new logs to verify if I'm right or not.

I've run the following on my system since my last post:
Hijackthis - Found 3 Services that seemed to be troublesome and removed them. They were AegisP, BrPar, & BVRPMPR5.
Malwarebytes - Found nothing
Super Anti Spyware - Found 4 files that it said were a variation of Trojan.Agent/Gen-Zbot. Removed them.
ESET Online Scanner - Found "a variant of Win32/RootKit.Kryptik.FW trojan" and removed it.
House Call Online Virus Scanner - Found nothing

After running all of these, still had issues with a virus so ran all of the above a second time. Nothing found by any of the above on second run.
Computer running normally for now... not sure if I'm clean or not, though.

Re-ran DDS & GMER... logs below.

Attached "attach2.txt" (second run of DDS) and ark.txt (accidentally overwrote the first one but it's attached above)

I still have some logs from running the other programs above if you need them but I don't believe I have them all.

Thank you and looking forward to hearing that my system is clean (hopefully)

Edit: 12/6 morning to add the below:

I was thinking more about different symptoms my computer was having recently that I did not recognize as possibly being part of the nasty bug I have. In the last month my monitor has frequently been restarting on its own. It sort of reboots periodically. Usually when I'm looking at something graphic intensive. I just thought maybe it was my graphics card or the monitor was starting to die but now I'm thinking it's possible that the bug was hiding windows or commands from me on my desktop. Possibly letting me see the screen I expect while other things are going on behind it? This doesn't seem to be happening anymore. In addition, I'm now getting warnings from both Firefox and IE when I open a work website that it is showing some secure and unsecured information and is showing credit card numbers when opened in pdf as xxx'd out. In the past, it would show them as xxx'd out only if the order was older than a month but if it was only a day old it would show the full number. I'm now getting concerned that this thing infected my adobe or graphics and was getting credit card information. Please let me know if this is possible or not.

Another thing is that my MS Outlook started asking me if I wanted to compact when I exited. I use IMAP to download my emails on this program so this popup seems odd. I still get the same message now, not sure if it's related.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/430613 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello, my name is Elise and I'll assist you with this issue.

CF-SCRIPT
-------------
We need to execute a CF-script.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Start > Run and in the box that opens type notepad and press enter. Copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
c:\windows\system32\vIShXn.com

AtJob::

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Thank you, Elise. Here's the log file... attached. I wasn't sure if you wanted it in the reply or attached so I took a chance.

Hope that helps,

Another thing is that my MS Outlook started asking me if I wanted to compact when I exited. I use IMAP to download my emails on this program so this popup seems odd. I still get the same message now, not sure if it's related.

This is a normal OE function and is used to free up space, nothing to worry about.

How are things running at this point?

Things are running very well. I think I got most of the bad stuff off, I just want to be positive because I use my computer to remotely connect to my work network and I don't want to spread anything.

The only odd thing that is happening now is that my display is not working optimally. I have a wide-screen monitor and it occasionally turns off on it's own or shows static lines across my screen. I think I just need a better driver, though.

Thanks for your help,
5Leepy!

Hi, things look good at this point.

Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7u1.
  • Look for "JDK 7u1 (JDK or JRE).
  • Click the "Download JRE" button at the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Select "Windows x86 Offline" and click on jre-7-windows-i586.exe
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Uninstall all older versions of Java (any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE or J2SE in the name).
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Install the newest version by double clicking (run as Administrator for Windows Vista/Seven) the downloaded file.

Please launch Malwarebytes Antimalware, update it and run a full scan. Post me the resulting log.

regards, Elise

Looks good, do you have any problem left?

ESET ONLINE SCANNER
----------------------------
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

regards, Elise

Hi Elise,

I ran ESET but it did not find any threats. There was no option to "list threats" or export and save a file. My computer's working great now except for the issue with my display that I mentioned above.

Thank you,
5Leepy!

The display issue is most likely a driver problem. Try to reboot in safe mode and see if the problem persists there. If so, it is a hardware issue, if not, it is most likely a malfunctioning driver; reinstalling the display drivers may fix the problem.

ALL CLEAN
--------------
Your machine appears to be clean, please take the time to read below on how to secure the machine and take the necessary steps to keep it clean :)

Please do the following to remove the remaining programs from your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
  • Click start > run and type combofix /uninstall, press enter. This will remove Combofix from your computer.
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall. If you are connected to the internet through a router, you are already behind a hardware firewall and as such you do not need an extra software firewall.
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing.

Please reply to this topic if you have read the above information. If your computer is working fine, this topic will be closed afterwards.
