Installing drivers on Ubuntu

I have the .run file on my hard drive, and i am trying to get it installed, it is an NVIDIA 290.10 driver and i am running ubuntu 11.10, i have tried many ways to install it, and ran into several errors, I am very new to Linux. Thanks.

Try this:

chmod +x filename.run
sudo ./filename.run

Make sure you have the dot-slash in the second line.

Of course, change the filename.run part to the proper name in both cases.
