Hello,

First I would like to apologize as I am new to this site and I am unsure if this is the proper forum to post this, however it seems like a good start. I recently had the Win7 2012 antivirus virus on my computer which would not allow me to browse the web at all, let alone download any 'fixes.' I used my roommates laptop to google advice and bleepingcomputer came up. I followed the advice given on using the FixNCR, then iExplore, and finally MBAM. That seemed to do the trick and fix my problem at the time. However, when I returned to my computer I was using firefox to google several sites such as Redbox, Rivalssports, Wikipedia, and I was being constantly redirected. The redirection seemed to only occur when using google on firefox. I attempted a little research, but was overwhelmed with the difference between each 'instance' of a google redirect. So, I am posting here in hopes of finding out if I have an actual virus, malware, or if it is firefox. If it is important my computer was fine and has been fine since I built it back in March (No problems loading and no problems with internet sites, it also does not run slow). Today is my first instance of any malware/virus and it occurred after I had completed working on a document for class when I got tabbed out of starcraft2 to be alerted to the Win7 2012 antivirus. Sorry for the ramble, but I figured being as explicit as possible might help.
-Thanks

Welcome aboard Posted Image

You're not running any AV program.
Install one of these:
- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- free Microsoft Security Essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials
- free Comodo Antivirus: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/antivirus.php
Update, run full scan, report on any findings.

Is IE getting redirected as well?

So far I can see "hosts" file missing.
We'll get back to it in a moment.

When done with the above.....

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Hey,I think my edit ended up cutting off the rest of my initial report and I had to add it back on, sorry!
Anyways so far I have not noticed it in IE, however it does occur in Chrome.

Results of Avast! full system scan:
3 threats found
C:\\Windows\assembly\GAC_64\Desktop.ini
C:\\Windows\System32\consrv.dll
C:\\Windows\System32\consrv.dll

I also performed an Avast! boot scan and there was only one found, the C:\\Windows\assembly\GAC_64\Desktop.ini When I attempted to move this to the chest (not sure if I should) I received the error, 0xc000009C {STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR}

Lastly the GMER returned with nothing found.

Hopefully this all helps, thanks again : )

Hi, sorry for the late reply. Ok, maybe I am missing something. My initial post has the full logs for the minitoolbox scan, the MBAM scan. My second post has the findings of the avast! scan and so far I am only noticing this in Mozilla and Chrome. The GMER scan had nothing to saved when I clicked save after a scan. It reported finding nothing.

Ooops, my fault.

Let's recreate missing "host" file.

Open Notepad.
Paste the following text into it:

# Copyright 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Go File>Save As and...

1. Name the file hosts. (no extension; make sure there is just a "dot" at the end <--- VERY IMPORTANT!)
2. Make sure, "Save as type:" is set to "All Files (*.*)
3. File is saved to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder

I have not noticed any redirection, thanks!
Not sure if that is all it took, but the avira! doesn't seem to be able to move the findings to the chest, is this related?

Good news :)

You may want to reinstall Avira.

Last checks....

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

Ok I ran the temp file clean up and I got a blue screen when the computer was booting up that read : "Stop: c0000135 the program can't start because %hs is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." The computer would not start windows so I did the windows repair which used a system restore point. However, I think I am missing the host file again, should I just follow the above directions to save the same host file? Here are the logs from the ESETScan
C:\Windows\System32\lYVO0.com_ a variant of Win32/Kryptik.VRX trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Windows\system64\consrv.dll Win64/Sirefef.E trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Windows\Temp\hki182.exe a variant of Win32/Kryptik.VRX trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
Operating memory a variant of Win32/Sirefef.DN trojan

So my next question is since I went through a system restore from the temp file clean up should I rescan with ESETS and everything else :( ?

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
