Hope someone out there knows a fix for this. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium w/ SP1 on a Dell laptop.
I went to a site and within moments I received a "Your computer is infected". I rebooted my computer to run Rkill and Malwarebytes but was unsuccessful as the rogue program continued to run. I booted up again and the rogue program changed my desktop background. I rebooted into Safe Mode and ran Rkill and Malwarebytes and the scan found 3 items. Here's that log report:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I rebooted and brought up Windows normally and ran Rkill and did a Malwarebytes full scan which didn't find anything.

However, when I run Rkill, the following message pops up:
Posted Image

I ran Task Manager to look at the Processes as rkill was running and "pev.rkexe" shows up and takes up to 26% of CPU usage. Eventually, after 8-10 times of the above message popping up and me closing it rkill stops running. The process stops appearing in the Task Manager as well. There is no further issue but Malwarebytes scans don't pick anything up and I'd like to be able to get rid of "pev.rkexe" (or whatever's behind it).
Additionally, I checked the C:\ProgramData\ob12400kpaka12400\ directory and there is still a file in there called "oB12400KpAkA12400" with no extension associated with it. I was going to manually delete that directory but thought I'd wait until I got a response on here.
Thanks!

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Just a quick question, but does anyone know what setxtnd.dll is? The error logs tie that app module in with pev.rkexe. I ran a program called freefixer and it found pev.rkexe and associated it with setxtnd64.dll as well. I found the setxtnd64.dll file in C:\Windows\System32 as a hidden file. It looks like it was created around the same time my system was infected.

I uploaded the setxtnd.dll file to several online virus scanners and it was identified as a Trojan backdoor. It came back as Backdoor.Win32.Papras.emr, Gen:Variant.Kazy.34612, and BackDoor.Generic14.BYWW (among others).

With the help of a tool called FreeFixer I deleted the setxtend64.dll file located in my C:\Windows\System32 folder and setxtend.dll located in my C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder.
After rebooting and running rkill I don't get the "pev.rkexe has stopped working" message. Everything else seems to be running fine for now.
I guess a mod can close this topic if need be.
Thanks!

Whenever I tried to install an antivirus program the setup would crash and the details indicated that setxtnd.dll was the cause. I'll go ahead and install Avast! and do those other things you listed.

Ha! I definitely jumped the gun (and I never said I was a good PC tech :) )...
I ran a full system scan with Avast and it found 20 infected items. I did a boot scan and it found 160.

Here's the proxy settings report:

I installed Avast and did a full scan and boot scan. Unfortunately I didn't set it up to create a report file. I did a second full scan and no infected items were found.
Here are screen shots for the scan logs:

The Boot Scan found 160 items--

The second Boot Scan didn't find any items--
