Hi All - I was being helped in another forum and they said I might be infected. The thread is here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic426080.html

Broni said that I should post the GMER and DDS logs here. I have a question before I do that, should I be running the logs with the svchost.exe that is using all the CPU still running or can I kill that service then run the programs? I'm not sure what these programs do and if the problem svchost.exe is not running, will it catch the possible infection? It will take quite a long time to run them if the problem svchost.exe is running the CPU near 100%, but if it needs to be done, so be it.

Thanks for your help, in advance.
Ken

Orange Blossom suggested I try to run the programs with the bad svchost running to see if that helps identify the problem. I was able to run the DDS program with the bad svchost, but that took 1.5 days to complete. I couldn't run the GMER that way or it would have probably taken a week and I need to use the PC for work, so I couldn't have it out of commission that long.

Here are the results:

DDS with the bad svchost.exe running -

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/430066 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Description: When starting the PC, a svchost.exe that runs the windows updater and other programs, fluctuates between running at 75 to 100%. Changing the priority does not cause the CPU to lower. When I kill the process, there are many things within the OS that stop working. In doing research, I found that several people have documented that this was caused by a windows XP update. I have tried updating since then hoping Microsoft has a fix for it, but the problem persists. I created a topic in the "Am I infected" forum, which the helpful members asked me to run different programs to determine if there is an infection. The link to the topic can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic426080.html

I have ran DDS and GMER logs which I attached above. There are 2 DDS logs, one with the bad svchost.exe running and one without. I couldn't get the GMER to run with the bad svchost using the CPU.

I am running Windows XP PRO - SP3. I don't have a Windows disk as this is my work's PC and they can't find the Windows install disk in the office in NY. I'm in FL or else I'd try to find it, myself. :o)

I don't know if I would be able to use another person's XP PRO install disk if I need to do a re-install. The Windows Key is legal and it is not a cracked OS. Maybe I could use the key to get Microsoft to be able to give me another Windows install disk? I don't know how all that works.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

No malware was identified on your log.

I do some some empty drivers associated with Norton.
If no longer using this security program I suggest you run the uninstalled found here.
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool FOR YOUR CURRENT PROGRAM.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=
===

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
===

Please let me know if the problem persists.

Than you for your reply, nasdaq!

I was prompted in the previous thread to remove the Norton. I was given the same link to the uninstall tool. I thought I successfully uninstalled it as I don't see it listed in my programs anymore. I also ran the uninstall tool again and when it listed the Norton programs for uninstalling, it only listed pcAnywhere, which I need for work. I closed out of the uninstaller and proceeded with the running of ComboFix.exe

I'm attaching the results of ComboFix. The issue still exists :(

As a side note, I'm curious as to what the 3 boxes that are appearing at the bottom of my C: drive? I don't know when they appeared. Please see screenshot that I'm attaching.

I'm running the programs as you outlined above.

One thing, though. You ask that I paste the text of the logs into the reply. I tried to do this when I originally ran the ComboFix, but the Forum told me that the post was too long, therefore I had to attach it rather than delete information that you may need. If I run into that again, should I attach the txt file again, or is there part of the log that I can remove to make the post shorter, and therefore successfully paste it into the reply?

Thanks,
Ken

I'm pasting the log results below. I'm downloading the updates (I have it set to notify me that there's an update, but not to download it automatically). I haven't tried to update since this issue began as your forum states to not modify the computer in between posting logs.

*Note - ComboFix prompted me that there was a newer version and asked if I wanted to update it. I did. I don't know if that negated the running of the CFScript.

This is the version of wuauclt.exe which is used by the operating system

=========== > Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 Feb 2010 + McAfee AV
It has a reference to McAfee. Did you at one time used that security program and is was removed.

There is an other good copy for Service Pace 3 not associated with McAfee. We may be able to use it.

I don't recall having McAfee on this machine, though it used to belong to a different employee.

I've tried to install updates. I get notified that there is an update to be downloaded and installed. I indicate that I want the update and the yellow shield disappears. This is normal behavior as it will notify me that when the update is downloaded, it is ready to be installed. I haven't been notified that the download is ready to be installed and I indicated I wanted the update yesterday.

I've also gone into the Control Panel, security page. I clicked on the link that asks to check for updates. It notified me that there are updates to SP3 for Office, and also to SQL 2005, which I've tried to install the update to that before, and it hasn't been successful.

Oh, and the 3 boxes on the c: drive - there are only 3 sub folders named "67, 72 & 88" under the 3 boxes folder. nothing is in the sub-folders.

Open the file in bold with note pad. Copy and post the content in your next reply
C:\Windowsupdate.log
If the file is very large then attach it.

As for the stranges folder if empty then delete them.

There is no file C:\Windowsupdate.log

And the system will not let me delete the 3 boxes folder. When I right click to delete it, it just hangs the system. No right click menu appears. Nothing happens when I have the folder selected and hit the delete key, either.

I think we can forget about the undeletable folders. They are empty. No harm will come of it.
===

Lets try this.

Copy the file in bold
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe
To the C:\ drive (root).
Will keep a copy in case we need it later.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

FCOPY::
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\wuauclt.exe | C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe

Save this as CFScript on your desktop.

Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Restart the computer before posting the log.

Try the updates from Microsoft.

Let me know what problem persists.
