Western Union abandons telegrams
February 1, 2006 11:22 AM PST

The Internet strikes again.

First it mostly did away with brick-and-mortar auction houses. Then newspaper classifieds went the way of the Model-T Ford.

And now, thanks to the ubiquity of e-mail and instant messaging, Western Union is getting out of the telegram business...

//Koan's comment: I live very near a road called "Telegraph Road" in Maryland.
It was the straight line shot from Baltimore to Washington D.C. that the telegraph poles were set in at the time.
It now only exists in small fragments of the original line.
The only easy day was yesterday.

...some do, some don't; some will, some won't (WR)

Telegraph Road by Dire Straits

was an early release by the band ... long and lyrical,
it is sort of a "template" for subsequent successful songs
by them and Mark Knopfler's individual efforts ... in retrospection.

amazing what retrospection can do to & for a present viewpoint.

Communication & Banking just won't seem the same w/o that option available ...
Western Union had it's place in many novels & movies.
patiently patrolling, plenty of persisant pests n' problems ...

Right you are, BlackSpyder

Picassos are definately out of my league,
(if I was in that league, I'd shop for a Dali though)
BUT I still visit a couple of estate liquidation auction houses in the area that
have been going for decades and likely will continue.

Shipping costs associated with Ebay will always place value on local acquisitions, I think.
