I've been battling this one for the better part of a day. It started with the machine not being able to connect ot oovoo due to Macaffee being expired (least that's how it originally looked). Removal of the expired Macaffee made oovoo usable again. To ensure there was antivirus software on the machine I loaded AVG. That's when the fun and games began. AVG detected consrv.dll as a trojan and removed it. After that I rebooted the machine and the machine boot loops. If I run a system repair, it brings the machine back to a state prior to the load of AVG and it boots into Windows 7. After that, you have to reload the antivirus software again, and when it runs its scan, it finds the consrv.dll again, removes it, reboot, boot loop.

Here is the dds log:

I've attached the gmer and attach logs but, when I went to run gmer, most of the options were greyed out. The only ones with checkboxes available were Services, Registry, Files and ADS. None of the other available for use.

The machine appears to function properly but I cannot put antivirus or spyware protection on it as they both find the offending dll, remove it, and make the OS inoperable. Any help you provide for clearing this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Matt Rosenlum and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I apologize for the delay.

I am D-FRED-BROWN and I will be helping you. :)

Please print or save this topic: it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

Go ahead and disable any antivirus scans you may have running. As you noticed, they will attempt to quarantine the aforementioned file, and cause the system to become unusable. We'll take care of the file manually :thumbup2:

---------

Let's take some preliminary steps to ensure that we will be cleaning the computer safely :thumbup2: :

BackupYour Registry with ERUNT
  • Please go here, scroll down to ERUNT, and download.
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your Registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: To restore your Registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

---------

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    :filefind
    consrv.dll
    winsrv.dll

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found at on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

---------

Please do the following:
Download Registry Search (see the link titled RegSearch Download Link), and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract the files from Regsearch.zip to your Desktop.
  • Double click regsearch.exe to start the program.
  • Enter consrv in the top area of the form and then click "OK".
  • Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file named RegSearch.txt will be saved in the program's folder as well). Copy/paste this file in your next reply.

---------

Please download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

-------------

In your next reply, please include:
  • SystemLook.txt
  • RegSearch.txt
  • checkup.txt

How is your computer running now?

Thank you for your response D-Fred.

Attached are the three log files you requested.

And as far as how the machine is working...from a user's point of view, they wouldn't be able to tell there was a problem, as the machine appears to be working properly. It's only when we attempt to load AVG or run Malwarebytes in an attempt to remove the consrv.dll that we cause the boot loop. I'll know the machine is working properly when I'm able to load antivirus, run a scan, come up clean, and am able to reboot and not crash and burn at startup.

Please look over the attached txt files and advise me one what should be done next.

Thanks again for all your help!!

-Matt

No problem :thumbup2:

Let's take care of consrv.dll (do not delete it yet, we need to verify this procedure worked before we do actually remove the file):

Copy the contents of the below code box to Notepad; Save As FixReg.reg to your Desktop; make sure File Type: is set to All Files (*.*).

Close Notepad.

Locate FixReg.reg on your Desktop. Right-click on it , and select Run as Administrator and answer 'Yes' when asked if you want to merge with the registry.

---------

Next, let's verify the procedure was a success by doing the following (same programs as in my previous post ):

-------------

In your next reply, please include:
  • SystemLook.txt
  • RegSearch.txt

Please reboot the computer, and then run those last 2 programs once again, and attach the logs they produce

No worries, it was my mistake.

Quick question: when you ran fix.reg earlier, did you run it as Administrator?

I attempted to run as administrator, but when I right clicked on the reg file, there was no option for that. I even did a shift right click as I know you get more options that way but still no option to "Run as Administrator..." I see that option when I right click on programs such as the erunt-setup, but not on the reg key file you had me create.

Can you please try running the fix from Safe Mode? Afterwards, please re-run RegSearch & SystemLook. Let me know how it all goes

Rebooted to safe mode. Again ran the fixreg.reg key.

Rebooted back into standard mode. Attached are the SystemLook.txt and RegSearch.txt files created in standard mode after applying fixreg.reg in safe mode.

We looking any better?

The fix didn't quite stick. Let's try this instead.

OK, now the part where you have to be extremely careful with what you're doing.

VERY IMPORTANT! Create new restore point!

Now, go Start and in "Start search" type in:
regedit
Press Enter.

Registry editor will open.
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems
In right pane you'll see a line named "Windows"
Right click on it, click "Modify".
A pop-up window will open.
In "Value data" box you'll see this:

%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,20480,768 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=consrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ServerDll=sxssrv,4 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

Replace word in red (consrv) with winsrv

Then, repeat the same procedure for the remaining 2 entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems

Same procedure as above, find and replace consrv with winsrv.

After you are done, Exit registry editor. Reboot the computer.

After rebooting, please re-run RegSearch with the same code as before.

If you did it correctly your computer should reboot just fine.

Let me know how it goes.

Ok...I made the changes to the registry (in std mode not safe mode) and then rebooted. I've attached the new logs here but, I did check the registry after the reboot and the CurrentControlSet and ControlSet1 settings has gone back to "consrv" even though it was changed to "winsrv" before rebooting.

I've even attempted to make the change in safe mode, but even there, I make the change, go back and look at the key string, and it's back to what it was prior to me making the change.

Please advise.

Let's run ComboFix:

Please download ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

***IMPORTANT: save ComboFix to your Desktop***

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please go here to see a list of programs that should be disabled.

**Note: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
Also, please let me know if any problems still remain.
