Desktop would not come up, no change in safe mode, could access files in task manager and open them. Ran combofix, stated AVG was running but user console said no items active. Computer is useless at present anyway, ran Combofix, detected a rootkit, rebooted, ran again, found and repaired multiple infected files. Found some files it could not restore or replace. Now have blue screen, before background would come up. I can still access files through task manager. I have had limited time and have not been able to get someone who is more knowledgeable to come and fix it but we need it at home for my daughter to use for school and funds are too tight to buy a new one right now. Please Help!!

Ok just realized I did several things that you don't want. I was told to run combofix by a coworker that normally helps people with computer problems. I will wait for instructions if some one has any ideas. Thanks

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/429729 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Initial problem started with a google redirect, then soon after the system would come up with the background visible but no desktop and no start menu. I could access files through the file run menu in task manager and open the files, but could not get to programs without opening existing files. A friend told me (prior to me finding this site) to download and run combofix and see if it fixed the problem. Combofix told me that I was infected with ZeroAccess and it was in the tcp/ip stack. Ran it a total of 3 times hoping it would be able to repair the damaged files. Now the computer comes up as the BSOD, I can still access files through the task manager and I have run the requested programs from a USB drive. Here are the logs from DDS and GMER. I was able to use the defogger tool as well prior to running GMER.

Here are the logs, I posted the combofix log before I knew I wasn't supposed to run it yet.....

Also, I do think I have my original install cd but just moved recently and it is packed in a storage space. Attempting to locate it. Any issues with backing up my files with this infection? I don't want to move it to another computer by accident.

Hi,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My name is m0le and I will be helping you with your log.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already. Click the Watch This Topic button at the top on the right.

  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

  • Please reply to this post so I know you are there.
The forum is busy and we need to have replies as soon as possible. If I haven't had a reply after 3 days I will bump the topic and if you do not reply by the following day after that then I will close the topic.

----------------------------------------------

Can you please run OTL, this is a scanner and should run okay.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Hope you and and yours are well this holiday season. I am having to use a USB drive to do these tasks and I don't want to infect my laptop, any special precautions other than my security essentials and firewall?

Thank you again,

We have to identify the rootkit (and it is a rootkit) that is causing the problems

Please download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

There's ZeroAccess on the logs.

Can you rerun Combofix and post the log.

m0le,

Redownloaded newest combofix and ran it, first time said it detected rootkit activity and needed to reboot. Ran second time said "infected with ZeroAccess it has inserted itself into the tcp/ip stack, this is a particularly difficult infection, if you have difficulty accessing the internet rerun combofix again". It ran through all 50 stages, then started deleting and restoring files. Then it suddenly rebooted with no warning. Reran combofix when it came back up, this time it went through 50 stages deleted one file and suddenly rebooted without warning. I have not been able to create a log for you. Still have BSOD I can only access files through the run task command in task manager.

Should I rerun combofix until I can create a log?

Thanks,
hunterrn145

No, Combofix looks like it's been stopped for now.

Please run TDSSKiller

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

  • Now click Start Scan.
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
  • Click Close
  • Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\
