Hello cf -
Please read Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 - Help & How-to
Step 2: Installing Windows 7
When you upgrade to Windows 7, you keep your files, settings, and programs from Windows Vista.

Thank You -

Presuming you use the upgrade version noknojon is correct with certain caveats. You can not upgrade from Vista Ulitmate for example to a lower level of Windows 7 as a upgrade.

I suggest cloning the drive or at least backing up important files before trying to upgrade.

An OEM version will never upgrade. It will (usually) move your files into a windows.old folder first then do a clean install.
