Hello,

My new problem comes with the family computer in our house. It is rarely used these days with everyone jumping on their laptops instead but when we do go to use it we are reminded of how PAINFULLY SLOW it is. I've got a feeling that it's riddled with viruses, so I'd like to clean up the system for good if possible. Sometimes scans bring back nothing but other times (like today) a scan with AVG 9.0 alerted me to instances of the infection;

"Trojan horse Dropper.Generic4.CJUY" in 4 different files and also;

"Object name";"C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Desktop\INSTALL_MSN_MESSENGER_DL.EXE"
"Detection name";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation."

AVG 'removed and healed' the infections where they were moved to the virus vault. A follow up scan using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware came up clean and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition only picked up a few tracking cookies but I'm pretty sure I'm not done and dusted with the problem.. I'd like some help with cleaning up the sytem so that the computer can be used safely in the future.

Helping me out with a laptop problem previously, a member suggested a scan with ESET Online Scan. Would that be a good place to start in this instance? Thanks in advance for any help that I recieve!

Cheers,

Dan

Hello, yes ESEt is a good idea,.. You should also run SAS (SUPER) in safe mode and on all user accounts.
We'll run some things. Post the logs and tell us hiw it's runnnitng after.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Download Link 1
Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Troubleshoot Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Let's get some system info....
Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Hello 'boopme'! Thanks for the speedy reply once again..

Ok, here are the results of the ESET scan:

C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\jvmppack.jar-4b184584-5ad51d7e.zip probably a variant of Java/TrojanDownloader.Agent.NCT trojan deleted - quarantined
C:\Program Files\Orange\setup\OrangeFirefox.exe Win32/PrcView application deleted (after the next restart) - quarantined
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP342\A0055553.exe Win32/PrcView application deleted - quarantined

This was followed up with a scan using malwarebytes, which came back clean:

After this I cracked on with downloading the MiniToolBox but only seconds into running it AVG flashed up claiming it had detected Malware;

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\MARK\DESKTOP\MINITOOLBOX.EXE

I was given the option to 'quarantine' or 'allow' it. I quarantined it and was encouraged to restart the system immediately to ensure removal. After restarting, AVG confirmed its removal.

I did run SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition in safe mode after this blip and only a few tracking cookies were picked up.

So, I haven't been able to achieve a result from the MiniToolBox.. What do you think happened with that? I've ran it on my laptop before without any issues. Hmmmmm..

Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools, may at times be detected by some anti-virus and anti-malware scanners as a "Risk Tool", "Hacking Tool", "Potentially Unwanted Program", or even "Malware" (virus/trojan) when that is not the case. This occurs for a variety of reasons to include the tool's compiler, the files it uses, whether files are compressed or packed, what behavior it performs, any registry strings it may contain and the type of security engine that was used during the scan. Other legitimate files which may be obfuscated, encrypted or password protected in order to conceal itself so they do not allow access for scanning but often trigger alerts by anti-virus software.

Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. When flagged by an anti-virus or security scanner, it's because the program includes features, behavior or files that appear suspicious or which can potentially be used for malicious purposes. Compressed and packed files in particular are often flagged as suspicious by security software because they have difficulty reading what is inside them. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others or that it was simply detected as suspicious or a threat due to the security program's heuristic analysis engine which provides the ability to detect possible new variants of malware. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them. In these cases the detection is a "false positive". Either have your anti-virus ignore the detection or temporarily disable it until you run the tool.

Thanks 'quietman7' for giving me the heads up on the 'false positive'. I thought that myself but didn't want to take the risk. Pesky AVG.. Here is the result from MiniToolBox:
