Which is generally better for anything to do with the internet? (Disregarding cost of the PCI-E card)

Will using a dedicated PCI-E network card instead of my on board nForce card work better? The card I'm interested in is the Intel Gigabit CT Pro. People have said that CPU offload and web browsing have been faster with dedicated network cards compared to on board cards. Does anyone have any experience with this?

gb network cards will only work as fast as the network they are on .{ 10/100 network = 100mb max } basically i don`t think you would notice any difference. onboard or add on card will both use about the same resourses so for the sake of a few milliseconds i don`t believe there will be much improvement. that being said you would see a great improvement if present network device is faulty or very old .

Yeah, dedicated is almost always better (whether we're talking graphics, network, sound, etc.), but it's unlikely you'll even notice. Unless we're talking server-grade quality (and corresponding usage), the differences are probably negligible for everyday use in this case.

It's like trying to tell the difference between a .22 and a .30-06 by shooting a cardboard box (that's a Mythbusters analogy :wink: ).

Ive used both dedicated and onboard network cards from everything from cable internet to Fiber Optic, and really notice no difference between the two as far as surfing the internet is concerned. As long as the card has a faster connection the internet-say you have 8 meg internet there wont be any difference, 8 meg is still 8 meg. Now, on a home network it might make a difference if your transfering a lot of large files from one computer on the home network to another, but unless you have a internet connection that gives you a gigabyte bandwidth, your unlikely to see any difference.
