Hello all,
This is my first post to BleedingComputers so please forgive any mistakes this newb might make. I was not sure whether to post this here or the Windows 7 forum but here goes.

the problem I am having is that for the last week, I recieve errors while using the System Restore operation. Everytime I attempt to restore to a previous restore point, I recieve

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and setting were not changed.
Details:
the data is invalid. (0x8007000D)"

If I click the ""Run System Restore" button, I immediately recieve the message

"There was an unexpected error: Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF). Please close System Resore and try again."

Previously, I was able to use the System Resore operation at will with no problems. As I stated, this problem jut popped up suddenly. The sudden onset with no system changes (other than regular updates) implies to me some sort of virus or malware. Also, I begin to sweat bullets when i see the word "Catastrophic" on my computer. Everything I could find on the net using Google searches was less than helpful. I remember having a very similar problem running with XP and solved by doing and F-disk. It is not my preferred solution.

Here are my observations, initial tests and operations
1. Previously, I could restore to any point months in the past (assuming no drastic changes to the system). Now, after one or two days, my Restore points become invalid.
2. When I create a new Restore Point, the Restore operation works fine when tested after creation, but after one or two days, the error comes back.
3. I have deleted all previous restore points and recreated new ones. Same problem.
4. I have updated and run Spybot 1.6.2.46 (latest detection update: 11/23/2011). No detections.
5. I have updated and run Norton 360 version 5.1.0.29 (I'm sorry, I am using Norton). Everthing is clean.
6. I have disabled Norton Anti-virus Autodetect and Norton Smart Firewall and attempted to perform the System Restore. It did not work.
7. I have attempted to perform a clean boot and do the system restore in Safe Mode. No luck.
8. I have performed a Windows Disk Cleanup. took forever, but everything was good.
9. I have performed disk scan "sfc /scannow". No errors.
10. I have run Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4 and everything looks in place. However, I am no expert on deciphering the results and apparent the forum rules say I cannot post those results here yet.
11. System performance seems good but I am scared to death that some low-life scumbag is running some virus or malware on my PC and purchasing new sportscars with my info.

My desktop System specs are as follows:

OS - Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64
Version - 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
Motherboard - EVGA 780i
GPU - Nvidia EVGA GTX280
System Model - 132-YW-E178-FTW
System Type - x64-based PC
Processor - Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz, 3166 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date - Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG, 6/30/2008
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) - 8.00 GB
Total Physical Memory - 8.00 GB
Available Physical Memory - 6.77 GB
Total Virtual Memory - 16.0 GB
Available Virtual Memory - 14.7 GB
Anti-Virus - Norton 360 5.1.0.29
Anti Spyware - Spybot - Search and Destroy 1.6.2.46 detection update: 11/23/2011
Preferred Web browser - Mozilla Firefox 8.0 (still have IE though)

Any one of these three solutions would work for me:
A.) Identifying the culprit and destroy it thereby making my computer work as it used to.
B.) Correcting the error within Windows so everything is back to normal
C.) "Everything is fine! this sometimes happens in Windows. you worry too much JRaugustus!"

Thank you all for your help.

Here is an update...and nothing is good.

I attempted to perform Norton scans from Safe Mode and it crashed every time. what is worse, it almost always crashed to BSOD. After this, I could not restart in Normal mode without first performing a CHKDSK. Sometimes it would not even start in Safe Mode without some witchcraft on my part. As icing on the cake, when I was able to log into normal mode (and post this update), the Norton AV had been disabled. I will post a number of logs here for your viewing pleasure, including the CHKDSK results, BSOD Event Log, BSOD .cab and BSOD .xml.

Here is the results of the CHKDSK for the C: operating system hard drive:

Sorry about the yellow text color on the data labels. I thought it was a highlighter. Also, If you think a hardware issue is to blame for these troubles, please let me know. At this point, any news would be helpful.

How old is this lap top?

We need to know more about your BSODs...

Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)

No installation required.

Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program and When scanning is done, go to Edit > Select All.

Then go to File > Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Compliments of Broni

The 0x124 BSOD's refer to Video Card. Is your video card clean from dust?

Cryptodan,
Thanks for the info. I have Good news and Bad news:

I pulled the video card and cleaned it and... Success! I was able to complete the Norton scan with no BSOD or any hiccups. I didn't think it was that dusty but I guess all it takes is one spec of dust.

The scan came out clean (more good news). Therefore, I attempted to perform a System Restore. Dismal failure with the same problem as described in my first post. What can be causing System Restore to fail? could I still have a (gasp!) virus or is this likely a Windows error and nothing to concern myself with? I look forward to your reply. thank you for your assistance.

I would disable system restore and delete all previous restoration points then re-enable system restore.

Cleaned, updated and scanned the system. Added Malwarebytes. All scans are clean. Followed Cryptodan's advise and turned off system restore, deleted all existing points and re-created a new point. we will see if that worked after a few days. thanks for Cryptodan's assistance.

I realize this is an old thread, but I am having the same issue whenever I try to run System Restore:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer system files and setting were not changed.

Details:

The data is invalid. (0x8007000D)  :axe:

This is frustrating because I use Microsoft Windows as my operating system, and I kind of rely on System Restore to fix the endless ocean of bugs, and glitches that come up. :smash:   I am seriously hoping that I do not have to disable System Restore, and restart it because I have other issues that I NEED to restore to an earlier time to deal with. I cannot afford to lose all of my retore points because of this....

PLEASE provide a solution that does not require losing my restore points, and thanks in advance!! :love4u:

P.S. I would have attached a screenshot  of my error box, but I cannot see how to do so here in my post,

My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
