I hope someone can help me. My son removed Microsoft Office 2003 today. It had expired so he decided to remove it (I don't know why). He then downloaded a photo imaging program from Microsoft (Photofinale). When it asked him to install, he click cancel. Now, everytime a program is selected or a new page comes up on the internet, I am getting the Window Install Popup: Preparing to Install screen for 1-3 seconds. I searched Microsoft and tried to re-register the Windows Installer. When told to search for msiexec.exe, it cannot be found. Where do I go from here, other than banishing my son forever? Sorry this is so long, trying to let you know exactly what has been done. Also, I am not very good at this computer stuff, so I will need very simple. Thank you!!

naterbug,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

The possible fix for you depends on whether you have SP2 installed or not. If you have the SP2 upgrade uninstall it, then reinstall it and you'll have Windows Installer 3.0 reinstalled. If you don't have SP2 take a look at this link. hth

I do have SP2 installed. I do not have the Windows xp disc (my computer came already loaded) so will this be a problem if I uninstall SP2. I know I can reinstall it from Microsoft, but just want to check before I do that. Thanks!!

Also, the only update Microsoft Update showed was Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3. Does this have anything to do with this?

I will be making chocolate chip cookies for ya'll for helping me!!

one other possible solution to your problem......... and this one is rather simple and just might give you an easy way to fix your pc....

Try to restore the pc using System Restore to a date prior to your son uninstalling the Office Suite.

i have found this to be an easy fix for problems like you are explaining

This is my first post. History: Trial version of Office 2003 expired 1/31/06. Tried to open Control Panel to uninstall and start using Office XP Small Business -- message: "error occurred while windows was working with...CoPM.cpl in System 32."
Microsoft tech suport referred me to start/run appwiz, and remove Visual IP InSight -- but that file wasn't on the list of programs. I removed an un-named installer from the top of the list, thinking that was the culprit.
Since then, Windows Installer dialog box pops up whenever I open Explorer or any other program. Microsoft tech support referred me to Article 261594 (Modify the Registry). Can now load Ofice 2000 without the installer popping up.
A friend ran Hijack this and installed ewido, Vundo Fix. I can now access Control Panel.
Still can't do System Restore beyond the present date, and Windows Installer pops up every time I open Explorer or click on a link.
I've run Norton System Works and Registry Mechanic; both claimed to have fixed some problems, but that bloody installer still keeps opening, even when I print a screen.
