Issue: Screen blinks with a buzzing sound coming from the laptop and eventually the backlight fails (blank screen with faint outline of what is on screen).

Seems to last a bit longer on battery than it does on power supply.

Any ideas what might be causing this and whether it's worth getting repaired?

It's entirely possible that your monitor or onboard graphics are failing. I would suggest that you contact Dell support and have it serviced if they deem it necessary. Your monitor's connection may also be loose internally, though that's unlikely unless you've thrown your laptop across the room lately.
