I was given a computer, and we can't play any sound.

Is there an actual hardware sound card I need to look for or a sound card driver? I was hoping someone could help me troubleshoot this please.

thank you

The computer is Dell Dimension 2350

The specification of your Dell model has integrated audio. Have you checked the device manager for any flags under sounds controller? Did you connect the right audio port for the external speakers?

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be being used...or not functioning....

That is all I know, otherwise I believe everything is plugged in correctly.

Start/Run...type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

Under Sound, Video, & Game Controllers...what is listed?

Are there any yellow markings at all in Device Manager?

Has this computer ever worked properly, in your presence?

Sound video and game controllers
audio codecs
legacy audio drivers
legacy video capture devices
media control devices
video codecs

There are NO yellow ! on these, but there is under Other Devices-Multimedia audio controller
The device status reads: The drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

Does this appear to be the issue?

BTW- I don't have any software for this, and the Reinstall Driver button of course failed. There is a Device Instance ID in the details tab...IDK if this in useful or not.

You can download the audio driver from Dell here. The driver is packed as a self-extracting executable file, so just double-click after downloading. The necessary files will be extracted and the installation program will run. This should get your sound going again.
