Earlier today, AVG detected Trojan Horse Generic25.CCYM on my computer. The infected file was named 'winwirpl.dll' and was located in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\DesktopMain32\winwirpl.dll

AVG moved 'winwirpl.dll' to the virus vault after which I rec'd multiple RunDll errors as RunDll could no longer find the file. I ended the RunDll task which stopped the errors. A couple hours later AVG detected the 'winwirpl.dll' file in a resore folder and placed it in the virus vault as well.

A couple of days ago I rec'd an AVG warning 'Exploit Phoenix Exploit Kit (type 2072) Detected' when I clicked on a Google search result.

I have also noticed that a few of my Google searches were being redirected beginning several days ago. I haven't noticed any redirects today?

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/428318 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I have done a little research on the internet and found a post on sophos.com which calls this a Sefnit-R Trojan. According to the post, besides dropping the infected winWIRpl.dll file, this trojan also creates 3 registry keys:

HKCU\Software\DesktopMain32\{715F009C-BF1D-4AB1-DDC0-B2BCE5543DA0}
HKCU\Software\DesktopMain32\{7389619F-0BDE-4841-D26F-B8BCAAF7D1A4}
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (winWIRpl.dll rundll32.exe)

I checked the registry and all 3 of the above entries are in my registry. I have NOT edited the registry. The 3 entries are still there.

Also, days before AVG detected this Trojan Horse Generic25.CCYM on my computer I got an AVG warning 'Exploit Phoenix Exploit Kit (type 2072) Detected' when I clicked on a Google search result. It seemed as though AVG blocked the threat, however, I did get redirected a few times after that and also had a small number of pop-unders for the next day or two. Since I moved the infected winWIRpl.dll file I have NOT been redirected or had any pop-unders. Prior the 'Exploit Phoenix Exploit Kit' warning I was not getting redirects or pop-unders.

I've attached fresh files from dds and gmer.

I look forward to the next step in determining what needs to be done to rid my system of this malware.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Thank you for your patience. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until Iíve given you the ďAll clear.Ē Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
Posted Image Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log

Gdirect:

Please do this next:
Posted Image Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above DirLook::

DirLook::
c:\documents and settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\DesktopMain32

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then disable your security programs and drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

I ran the CFScript file in Combofix and attached the new combofix log.
(Note: though I downloaded Combofix this morning, it brought up a message that 'there is a newer version available, do i want to update?' Because this was unexpected, I clicked 'No' and scanned with this morning's version)

I also updated and ran Mbam. Here is the Mbam log:

As far as I can tell, my computer seems to be running fine.

Here is the Eset list of threats:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{075956D5-66C7-4D4A-9592-9DBAA4263471}\RP809\A0104981.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.D application

Gdirect:

Your logs are looking good! Those ESET detections are in your system restore cache and will be cleared when we uninstall ComboFix. All I have left for you is an update and some very important cleanup:

Posted Image Your Adobe reader needs to be updated. Please visit Adobe's site and grab the newest version. Be sure to watch for and uncheck any boxes offering to install other software.

Posted Image Uninstall ComboFix
  • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard or click Start -> Run. Copy and past the following text into the run box that opens and press OK:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Posted Image

Posted Image Delete the following tools along with any other logs you saved from our work:
  • DDS
  • GMER
Posted Image Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Posted Image Finally, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions to help you stay clean in the future:
  • Restart any anti-malware programs that we disabled while we were cleaning your machine.
  • Keep your antivirus application and MBAM current and updated. Scan with them at least weekly.
  • Please read this post for some helpful information.
Please post once more so I know you are all set and I can mark this thread resolved. Good luck and stay safe!

RPMcMurphy,

Thank you so much for your help! My computer seems to be flying now.

I have one more question. I double-checked my registry to see if all of the entries that the sophos threat site indicated were associated with my virus are now gone.

The entry:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (winWIRpl.dll rundll32.exe)
is gone

However, the other 2 entries:
HKCU\Software\DesktopMain32\{715F009C-BF1D-4AB1-DDC0-B2BCE5543DA0}
HKCU\Software\DesktopMain32\{7389619F-0BDE-4841-D26F-B8BCAAF7D1A4}
are still there along with 2 more entries in the same HKCU\Software\DesktopMain32\ folder.

Is HKCU\Software\DesktopMain32\ a valid entry for anything other than my virus?
Is it OK to leave these entries in the registry?

Happy Thanksgiving,
Gdirect

Gdirect:

Happy Thanksgiving to you also. Those keys are harmless, as all the associated files have been removed. If you want to be rid of them though, this will do the trick:

1. Open Notepad.
2. Copy and paste the contents of the below codebox into Notepad.
3. Save the file to your desktop as "fix.reg" (WITH the quotation marks).

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DesktopMain32]
4. Double click the fix.reg file on your desktop and confirm the prompts that you wish to make the changes.
5. Reboot.
