Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium, SP2. Increasing frequency of crashes on start-up, unable to start-up, BSOD's once the os has loaded for 1-2 min. I get a variety of BSOD screens but most recently IRQL Not Less or Equal, Driver IRQL Not Less or Equal, ACPI Driver Internal, Bugcode USB Driver. Recently while running Startup Repair I crashed and got a "Win32k.sys" error, with a notification "An attempt was made to write to read-only memory"

I previously had a blaster worm that emulated Windows security alerts, but I thought I had gotten rid of it (have had ~3 months without symptoms). Now in addition to crashing/ bsods, there have been new warnings that certain blocked start-up programs have been restricted from loading. A week ago I got a similar Blaster / fake-privacy alert pop-up window, but that has not happened again.

Malwarebytes picked up a few threats when run a week ago, but when run more recently didn't find anything.

For some reason malwarebytes is loaded twice on my system. There is a chance I accidentally installed it twice, but I am also suspicious one version may be a virus?

I recently found tracking cookies (Atdmt, sqlite) which were quarantined.

I've gone through the Preparation Guide steps and run DDS, GMER log, disabled CD Emulation, etc. Thanks for your help!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. [/b]
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Yes I am still having intermittent shutdown/ bsod problems. They happen less frequently but still occur a few times a week. AVG warns me about a spyware cookie in the sqlite group each time I start my web browser (fire fox) - I click Heal or Move to Vault but it still pops up each time i open my browser.

After downloading the OTL.exe, I got a warning that the download contained a Trojan. My antivirus app is AVG. I am not sure if this is a legitimate concern or not please advise what I should do?

Thanks

Hi,

it seems AVG accidentally detects OTL as malicious. Please ignore the warning and run it anyways.

sqlite is how Firefox stores its data. Can you tell me exactly what name that spyware cookie has?

The spyware cookie (?) is "Tracking Cookie.serving-sys"

I am unable to download & install OTL. AVG kept popping up warning me the download contained "Trojan horse agent3.AXVV"

I disabled Resident Shield and Link Scanner in AVG, and restarted my browser, and FireFox then failed to even load the page with the OTL download link.

I changed security settings in Firefox and disabled Protect Mode in Windows Security Center / Internet Options, and still could not load the page.

I tried to download OTL as a .com and .scr file (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/277391-otl-tutorial-how-to-use-oldtimer-listit/) and while the app would show up on my desktop briefly, an AVG warning would pop up the application was a Trojan horse agent 3 again...

One thing that seemed a little odd - the pop-up window had a header "AVG plug-in for Microsoft Office." Is this the same AVG antivirus I had just disabled, or some kind of additional plug-in?

Hi,

that is looking clean. I see you tried to run ComboFix. How did that work?

Good news! I'm not sure what Combofix did, it didn't totally resolve the random crashing problem I was having. I ran Combofix and several other applications that I was directed to by this site, and there seemed to be moderate improvement (less frequent crashing), but I am not sure what did what and I still have intermittent problems. Is there somewhere else I could look at that might determine what is causing the crashing if it is not virus-related?

I'll attach the combofix log in case that helps.

Hi,

could you give me the error codes of the different crashes, I'll see what I can make of it.

A very "simple" approach to fix all kind of problems would be to uninstall and reinstall SP2. However I would wait with that until we have made sure that your PC really is clean.

Not totally sure this is what you were looking for but I ran two error logs from the event viewer. one is all Critical, Warning and Error messages from the past 7 days, and the second is all Critical events over the past month (I specified last 30 days, but it seems to have included events over a much wider date range?)

If this is not what you were looking for, please let me know how to get the right info?

Thanks

Hi,

you said you had a number of BSOD, I was wondering if you could give me the codes that were displayed when you had the BSOD> If you don't have them, we'll try to figure this out without them.

Have you had any BSOD recently?

Not sure about bsod's recently, the most recent crashes have happened while I was away from the pc. I would come back an hour or so later and see that whatever I had been doing had stopped mid-way through (normally using ConvertXtoDVD or CloneDVD, but some crashed happened when I was not using those programs)- and the pc had restarted. I am not sure if they showed a bsod or not - if there a way to access the bsod logs after the fact? I thought event viewer was a way to do that but not sure.

About 2 weeks ago I wrote down the error code from a bsod. This was when my pc was crashing more frequently (constantly - over and over - but I would get a respite every 6 or 7 restarts and would finally get the OS to load). It's a lot better now, but still has occasional crashing. Here's my notes from a series of bsods from ~2 weeks ago:

Repeated crashing/ bsod
I was told to launch Startup Repair / Repair Disk Errors
10 min into it I got bsod "IRQ_Not_Less_or_Equal"
Technical info: 0X0000000A (0XA1DA2D90,0X00000002,0X00000000,0X8E7A4F1E)
PC froze showing bsod
I forced restart w power button
Fan ran hard, windows did not load, 5 min
Forced restart
Suggested Startup Repair
It went into "attempt to check C file structure"
Crashed/ BSOD: "Driver_IRQL Not Less or Equal" (didn't get a chance to write down code)
Restarted, crashed again/ BSOD: "ACPI Driver Internal"

on 11/14 I had a bsod: "Bugcode_USB_Driver"

then a couple more IRQL Not Less or Equal.

Didn't have chance to write down codes. Is there a way to look up the bsod code history?

Hi,

I would try reinstalling these tools and running a sfc /scannow:
Please run a system file check.

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories then right-click Command Prompt and then click Run as Administrator. Then type in this command

sfc /scannow

Make sure to include the space between the first "c" and the "/".

This will run the System File checker and it will scan for corrupt or missing files. It may prompt you to insert the CD if it needs to obtain files.

Please post back when it has finished letting me know what it has reported.

These do not look like BSOD caused typically by malware.

Thank you I'll run that now. But I don't have an operating system CD - my pc was a floor model and came with the OS installed, and no original disks. Is there a way to locate missing files if I don't have the original CD's?
