.avi Conversion To .gif

I used a digital camera to make an .avi of a windmill near Palm Springs..Is there a utility to convert it to .gif format so I can use it as a sig or an avatar.. Do i make sense?

Ya know, this stuff is fascinating, yet irritating

I have not used any of these,but here is a good start

Current systems: WHAT OS, BackTrack-raw, PCLinuxOS, Peppermint OS 6, Kali Linux

and a custom Linux From Scratch server hosting a bunch of top secret stuff.
