My laptop has stopped installing windows updates. It downloads them and begins the installation process but is not able to complete it. After restarting it gives the error 'updates could not be installed'.

I tried running the microsoft 'fix it' programme but this did not resolve the issue and now I get an error saying 'host process For windows services has stopped working and was closed'. Once i get this error i have refuced functionality in windows and explorer will not work for me

I have tried deleting the BITS files and also a clean boot but neither of these has worked either.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer, please use this tutorial, run it , then restart, run it, then restart, run it a third time and post the results please : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
I like to run it 3 times as from experience i have seen it fix more files each time , by the 3 rd run , it has fixed what it will.

I ran the programme suggested in your link three times and it seems to have resolved the issue partially in that the error relating to the host processes being stopped no longer appears. During the reboot process it installed some updates but there are still 5 updates that it downloads but says it cant install. These 5 updates relate to vista security.

I am having difficuty pasting the log of the file checker as there are thousands of entries, likewise I am unable to attach it as it is 38.8MB. What would you like me to do?

Hi -
Can you just write down, and then type in the 5 missing / uninstalled updates in your next reply for lilbit96 to see.

Thank You -

Hi again, this update error seems to be affecting more people than one would think, i have researched this and the posted solution has worked for some , but, not for others. Please read this posted by a MVP of Microsoft : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_update/error-code-80071aa7/4868358a-ac52-4d99-9545-484b418dda68

Post back please if this was able to fix you or not. There may be some other option to take if needed.

I had tried this before I posted my original post and tried any of your suggested solutions. It didn't work and now when I get to step 2A renaming the catroot2 folder (ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2) I get the following error (A duplicate file name exists or the file cannot be found. I get the same error at step 3A renaming the software distribution folder (ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old).

I tried the fix but got the same error when I tried to rename the catroot2 folder (A duplicate file name exists or the file cannot be found) when I tried to rename the softwaredistribution folder I get an 'access denied' error. I done everything else in the fix and tried to update the laptop but didnt have any success. The 5 updates listed above will download but not install
