Yesterday my computer was infected by the "Windows Restore" Virus. I have no idea how I got it. Dozens of error messages were repeatedly popping up. Not knowing it was a virus until it was too late, I allowed it to "scan." When I couldn't close a certain window, and saw the "Click here to activate full-functional version," I knew something was fishy. I thought all was lost, but was able to do a REAL Windows restore, which worked. I have full function once again, however, I cannot stop all those sites constantly showing up in my history. I have run 3 separate spyware/adware removal programs, to no avail. I read a little about this virus and it seems I am not alone. Also, my "favorites" have been hidden and I don't know how to restore them. I am running Windows 7 Professional with IE 9. Please, can someone help?

Thank you, Computer wiz45. I followed the instructions, ran the RKILL; then ran Malwarebyte, which did not find anything. I then ran the "unhide" program, which worked like a charm. I also did searches for the "Associated Windows Restore Files," and none were found. I have not rebooted. I'm still getting the following sites in my history (there may be more coming, but these are the 2 showing right now):

http://www.dewytogabsu.com/ac4.php?aid=525&sid=direc40
http://www.walkubsilow.com/ac4.php?q=sem&aid=525&sid=direc40&nf=11.0.1

Even though I have added them to my "restricted sites," they continue to come up. I added several sites to the restricted list and they no longer appear, but I don't know if it's because I restricted them or if the Malwarebyte took care of them.

Any advice about what to do next?

I downloaded and ran Norton Power Eraser. All better now.
