I believe I went to a website and it infected my system. All my icons were wiped and I was given noticed that my registry was missing information. I scanned with Malwarebyes and the first time things were found. I cleaned them and rebooted my system but no luck. I did a virus update and scan and didn't find anything. I also cleaned my system with CCleaner and still no luck. I tried system restore several times but it did nothing for me. I'm currently runnying Vista 32bit SP 2. I ran hijack in safe mode and here is a copy of the log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/427602 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello and thank you for your support now and over the last few years. I'm currently attending school for my A+ so I have been working on trying to resolve this issue on my own but I haven't manage to do so yet. You may discover that there are a few programs download on my machine.

My machine is a Dell demision 3000 OS Microsoft Vista Service Pack 2 32bit.

I was attacked by the trojan FakeAlert. I was given false information about my registry and my icons were wiped away from my machine. I was not able to locate my documents or basic programs. I ran Megabytes Malware and thought the trojan was removed. I was later able to unhide most and recover most of my programs and files.

I have been given guidance by my instructor in the process as well. So none of the programs downloaded were just out of fun. Anyway here are the results from the logs that was requested:

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

The files in bold are suspicious.

S3 JRNHMDFMBLXPONSXGNFC;JRNHMDFMBLXPONSXGNFC;c:\users\jonell\appdata\local\temp\JRNHMDFMBLXPONSXGNFC.exe [2011-11-17 445312] G
S3 RLZI;RLZI;c:\users\jonell\appdata\local\temp\RLZI.exe [2011-11-17 473984]

Lets find out what we are dealing with.

>>> Run Jotti's malware scan: Please copy each line from the following (in bold):
c:\users\jonell\appdata\local\temp\JRNHMDFMBLXPONSXGNFC.exe
c:\users\jonell\appdata\local\temp\RLZI.exe

  • Go to Jotti's malware scan and click the Browse button,
  • A window will open, right-click in the File name field and choose Paste.
  • Click the Submit button and let the scan run uninterrupted.
  • At the end right-click the Permalink button and choose "Copy the link". Posted Image
  • Open Notepad (Start => All Programs => Accessories) and click "Edition" => "Paste".
    If more then one file submitted, return to the "Jotti's malware scan" window and click the "Next file" button to continue with the rest.
Please copy and paste these Permalinks in your next reply.
If Jotti is busy, please go to http://www.virustotal.com

The newer variants of the FakeHDD rogue programs are now deleting the following folders and storing them into a numbered folder under %Temp%\smtmp\:

%Temp%\smtmp\1\ => %AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu
%Temp%\smtmp\2\ => %UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
%Temp%\smtmp\3\ => %AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
%Temp%\smtmp\4\ => %AllUsersProfile%\Desktop

It goes without saying that running a %temp% cleaner ahead of restoration would result in loss of these folders
Since you have executed the CCleaner tool there is a good possibility that these \smtmp\ folders have been deleted.

Run this tool and see what you can get. Please download the following program to your desktop:

Unhide.exe

Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.

This may take sometime, please let if finish.
===

If you Start Program menu is empty, try this.

Right click on each of the folders and selected Open, to open the start menu folder in Explorer. Then browse to C:\Program Files\<program name> (or whatever location the program is installed in), locate the main program's .exe file (it will usually have a name very similar to the program name and the same icon), copy and paste it into the start menu folder you have open. Then close the folders and look in your start menu again, the shortcut should be there and functioning!

So for example, the start menu folder SpeedCrunch show up as (Empty). Right clicked on the folder and selected Open, then opened C:\Program Files\SpeedCrunch and located the .exe file named "speedcrunch". Copy and paste that file into the start menu folder".

==

Please post the results of the Jotti's scan and wait for further instructions.

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 27.
  • In the box labeled "Java Platform, Standard Edition", click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows (or Windows x64), and check the "agree" box and click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your Desktop.
  • Then from your Desktop double-click on jre-6u27-windows-i586.exe that you have downloaded to install the newest version.

    For the x64 bit version download this on jre-6u27-windows-x64.exe). Make sure you download the correct version.

    - Note: If you are running Vista or Windows 7, you may need to right-click on the installation file and select Run as Administrator.

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java™ 6 Update 22

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Include in your download" this is not required. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

I have updated my system with the lastest versions of java and adobe. I will run malware to check my system again and send you a update. What can I safely remove from my system? With the help from you and my instructor I've downloaded a lot of programs: Gmer, Combofix, DDS, Security Check, SuperAnti Spyware, Defogger, Hijack this, Clamwin. What do you recommend me to unintall and or delete?

Also I have a file that looks like a notepad doc with a symbol like a tool instrument on my desktop thats titled desktop. Can I delete it? Another folder that is labeled drp can I remove or delete that? Both items are on my desktop.

With the help from you and my instructor I've downloaded a lot of programs:

Time for some housekeeping

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall
===

Gmer, DDS, Security Check, Defogger can be deleted.

p.s. Make sure you have enable your the CD Emulator.
HOW TO: Enable the CD Emulators...

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

The HijackThis can be remove using the Add/Remove Programs list.
Must forums now will now ask for a DDS log. The tool is updated often you should download load it if you have any problems in the future.

SuperAnti Spyware, Clamwin I leave it to you. Both tools are to be run manually.

===

Also I have a file that looks like a notepad doc with a symbol like a tool instrument on my desktop thats titled desktop. Can I delete it? Another folder that is labeled drp can I remove or delete that? Both items are on my desktop

What can you find out about the notepad doc and the drp folder?
Look at the properties.

You can always delete to your Recycle bin.
Keep them for a week or so. If all is well flush them.
