In the past few weeks, i was hit with this pesky Best Offers SW that wont go away... now im being bombarded with all kinds of stuff and it's freaking me out. I have run Spybot, Ad Aware, Ewido and done restart scans with all. Here is my HJT log after scanning on my most recent restart which included an Ad Aware start up scan. Thanks for anyone's help who get my computer back for me!!!!

OK,

I posted before and nobody responded, so I am trying again. If someone could please look over my HJT log (posted below) and let me know what i should remove, it would be most appreciated. I followed the instructions for removing Spyware Strike or whatever it was called, and this is my first HJT log since. I still am geting pop ups for The Best Offers, even though i have run Ewido, Ad Aware and Spybot, as well as removing TBONAS lines in HJT previously. Perhaps you can help??

Thanks,
Phil

Hello,

We have to do this in several steps, because you are dealing with some infections which needs a special treatment.
Let's deal with Best Offers first..

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

I see you already have Ewido installed. we'll need that also.

Next, download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Run Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column.
Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool.
Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given.
Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again.
This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next.
Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again.
Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects").
Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next".
Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

For a final cleanup, please run Ewido anti-malware.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido.
Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan.

Thanks so musch for your help! I am getting quite frustrated, as i thought i was rid of Spyware Strike, but it has come back again in the meantime. I ran Smitrem again in addition to your instructions. The only problem was that i was unable to print a log from Ewido... the option never became available at the bottom. If i need to run it again please let me know. Here is the HJT log.

Thanks again!

Hello,

I didn't mention anything about smitrem yet.. this is what we are going to do now.
By the way, I don't think you have the latest version from smitrem though.
So better to delete the version you are having now.

Anyway, please perform my instructions in exact the same way I ask you without missing any step.

It's better to print out the next instructions or save them in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.

* Download smitRem and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.

* Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Do not run it yet.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp249B.tmp
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dinst] C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [CMD] cmd32.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
<== this is a resource hog.

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

* Now open Ewido Security Suite
Click on scanner

* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

* Close Ewido

* Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab > uncheck and delete everything you find in there. (except for "My current home page")

* Reboot back into Windows.

* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt which is present on your Homedrive (C:\ in most cases)
and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Ok, no problem.

Perform everything in normal mode then. I'll see in the smitrem and Panda log afterwards what we still have to delete manually (where smitrem failed to deal with it in normal mode)

Please don't forget to reboot before performing the online scan with Panda, because the smitrem log won't be complete afterwards.

PS - These lines in HJT are ok?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52/200312...meInstaller.exe

I was worried about them, but I don't know what htey are for.

Hello,

Yes, above lines are OK. Your hijackhislog looks clean again.

I did everything, including borrowing my friend's USB keyboard

Good idea!!

Ok, an important remark here... i see you have Kazaa Lite installed. Most people think that it is not bundled with adware, but actually, it is... as I see in your Panda report (bundled with Brilliant digital/altnet)
That's why I strongly recommend You uninstall Kazaa Lite.
Look here for better alternatives and what P2P software NOT to install (which are infected): http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/

Delete next files manually:

Spyware:Spyware/BetterInet Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\inf\biini.inf
Adware:Adware/Transponder Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\inf\polmx2.inf
Adware:adware/ieplugin Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\kwv2.dat
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Wise Installation Wizard\WIS4574B9B383144C0F88634796CC739CEF_2_0_2_1.MSI

Most of what Panda found are present in your Temporary cache and are cookies, so Using ATF Cleaner again must erase that.

Let me know in your next reply how things are running now.

Things are much better now. Thanks so much for your help. I deleted those files in Windows Explorer, and also uninstalled Kazaa (I don't even use it). I have Limewire 4.9.37... don't know if that has anything on it or not... and Soulseek. The Best Offers seems to be gone, although i found some weird icons in my Windows directory, and they turned out to have a "Best Offers" description when i held my mouse over them. Are those just backups from when i deleted them with my anti-spyware programs? I deleted them anyways as well, as they were .exe's. Please let me know if there are any more steps to fixing myself up? Should i post a Panda log again?

THANK YOU!

Shaun

Also, is there some way to immunize my computer against this stuff getting in from websites?

Hello,

A panda log is not needed anymore.
Yes, that was possible that there were still some "bestoffers-leftovers" present. Normally another scan with Adaware SE and/or Spybot S&D would delete them as well. So, better to run those scans again to delete the leftovers if still present.

Also, is there some way to immunize my computer against this stuff getting in from websites?

Yes, most important thing is... Update to Service pack 2, this will secure your browser more.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
