I seem to have contracted a nasty bug. Here's a summary:
A few days ago my laptop started opening Internet Explorer on its own (it runs Vista 64-bit). It would open it on an advertising webpage like famoussearchsystem.com, and it would redirect any google searches I made to bogus advertising websites. I got more information on this site: http://antivirustech.com/remove-famoussearchsystem-com-famous-search-system-virus/
Here is more information on how to remove it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic400730.html/page__st__15__p__2271737#entry2271737
However, after removing conserv.dll with Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, or the manual method, I could not start my computer. Luckily Vista has a startup recovery thing that restored my registry to before the whole mess started. So now, I don't have any browsers popping up at random, but I still have that conserv.dll sitting in my registry, and who knows what kind of stuff it could send someone? I even tried changing the registry key before deleting conserv.dll like the second link says to do, and to no avail - Windows still refuses to start up after I do that, and then goes through the startup recovery that restores the evil file.
Any thoughts on how to get rid of this critter?
