On average about every thirty seconds my cpu usage will go up to 100% for around ten seconds, and then shoot back down. It does this even with no applications running at all: a look at the "system performance" tab reveals the constant ups and down at regular intervals, even when the computer is left idle for long periods of time, spiking from 0-2% to 97-100% and back constantly. This causes audio to warp and distort when it happens: it pops, slllloooowwws down, cracks, becomes almost unrecognizable from the source material (song, video, etc.), then returns to normal. . . only for it to happen again in another thirty seconds. The worst victim of this is the Windows start-up sound, which when loading Windows takes much longer and even sounds in a lower key! For a while I assumed perhaps my computer needed more RAM but adding more still did not resolve the issue, although otherwise it is running smoothly. I've explored every option from virus infection to bad drivers, but still nothing seems to help. Thanks for your assistance.

Well...what processes in Task Manager are active when these events occur?

Your CPU usage is reflected in narrative form there...on the Processes tab.

I did not want a list of processes...I guess that I wasn't clear.

You complain of excess CPU usage...you can monitor such, if it occurs...by looking at the CPU usage in Task Manager. It should be easy to spot any process involving 100% usage or anywhere near that close to such a high percentage.

Mystery solved.

Well, I know that but it still seemed to provide no definite answers, that's why I asked. There doesn't seem to be any obvious culprit, and the highest memory usage is usually by an essential Windows process such as explorer.exe or svchost.exe.

Overall system performance seems vastly improved. avast! seems to take up a lot of memory, though. . . is it OK to disable it when not in use?
