My computer had been infected with Malware that regularly redirected me to alternate websites when I clicked on Google search results.

This problem seems to have stopped on its own, as I haven't taken any action to fix it.
However, I believe that my computer is still infected as around the time of this Malware infection my computer started to freeze frequently, and that problem persists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please find the DDS log with this message, and the Attach log attached.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/427506 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

My computer had been infected with Malware that regularly redirected me to alternate websites when I clicked on Google search results. I upgraded Firefox and the redirect problem doesn't seem as bad, but there persist lots of computer problems - freezing, slow activity - that wasn't present before the Malware infection.

I have a 64-bit Windows so I can't generate a GMER Log.

I don't have the original Windows CDs.

Please find a new DDS Log attached and also pasted below:

Hello Lorn,

My name is ratman. I'll be helping you with your computer problems.

Thanks for posting your log.

Are you still getting redirects with Firefox? Do you get redirects with IE or any other browser?

Logs take a while to process due to intensive research that must be done. Please give me some time to look over your logs and I will post back soon.

Thanks for the reply!

I am actually not getting redirects in Firefox ever since I installed a newer version. I don't use IE, but I just ran some searches and don't have redirects their either.

Hello Lorn,

Before we begin, I would like to make a few things clear so that we can fix your problem as efficiently as possible:

  • Be sure to follow all my instructions carefully! If there is anything you don't understand, don't hesitate to ask.
  • Please do not do anything or perform other steps unless I have asked you to do so.
  • Please make sure you post all logs I ask you to, and make sure that the entire log gets posted.

====================================================================================

Going over your logs I noticed that you have uTorrent installed.
  • Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs.
  • They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites.
  • Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.
  • The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications.
It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, you will get infected again.
I would recommend that you uninstall uTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

====================================================================================

I would like you to run ComboFix.exe.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

===================================================================================

I'd like you to run a scan with aswMBR
Please download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

====================================================================================

In your next reply, please copy/paste the contents of the following:
  • C:\ComboFix.txt
  • aswMBR Log

How is your machine behaving now?

regards, ratman

I believe I already had deleted uTorrent from the computer prior to running the initial scans I attached. It was no longer listed under the programs list. Is it possible it is still on the computer?

Below are the logs for ComboFix and aswMBR. I'm not sure yet if the performance has improved, I should be able to notice by the end of today.

Thanks for your help!

Hello Lorn,

Your Windows7 software needs to be updated to Service Pack 1
This can be done by:
  • click Start Button
  • click All Programs
  • click Windows Update

Good work - your computer is clean

Just a couple of housekeeping tasks now.

We need to delete ComboFix:

Please rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click on it.

====================================================================================

Except for Malwarebytes, you can simply delete all other tools we used as they don't un-install.

Things to do to stay safe:

  • Make sure Windows Updates (including Internet Explorer) are current. Follow instructions here
  • Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a week to assure safety of your computer.
  • Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.
  • When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.
  • Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!

Happy and safe surfing!
