Hello, I posted on the Win7 Forums but it was suggested I try here too - I think because I mentioned using ComboFix. Basically I'm having a nightmare and hoping someone can advise. Thanks in advance.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit.

While browsing on 29th Oct 2011 at 15:08: my Virgin Media Security flagged a Trojan-detected message from the task bar; IE closed; I think Windows Live Mail shut down too; a persistent UAC promp came up and I eventually clicked 'Yes' – thinking it was something to fix the Trojan - ouch!

On booting up on 30th Oct a persistent UAC prompt re-appeared. (From memory the Programme Name was Windows Command Processor and Publisher was Microsoft. The Programme Location I wrote down as "c:\Windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe"C:\Users\*ME\AppData\Local\Temp\tncjsvcqajyvllqw.exe"). I got rid of the prompt by continually pressing Esc, which eventually drives it down to taskbar.

So in safe-mode I deleted by hand all the (suspicious) files created at 15:08 on the 29th; I used System Restore to go back a few days; after booting normally I ran a full-scan with Microsoft Safety Scanner, it detected and removed Exploit:Java/CVE-2010-0840.EW & Exploit:Java/CVE-2010-0840.MZ. I then ran a full-scan with Malwarebytes which came up clear, and clear again the next day.

All has been well until today. The same UAC promp appeared maybe one hour after booting. First off I've run a quick Malwarebytes scan which got the following results,

Registry Values Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\CihOqtak (Trojan.Agent) -> Value: CihOqtak -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
Files Infected:
c:\Users\*ME\AppData\Local\Temp\0.8044365899653985exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
c:\Users\*ME\AppData\Local\tcpcgqqt\cihoqtak.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
c:\Users\*ME\AppData\Roaming\microsoft\Windows\start menu\Programs\Startup\cihoqtak.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
c:\Users\*ME\AppData\Local\Temp\jar_cache2376547655565355977.tmp (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
c:\Users\*ME\AppData\Local\Temp\tncjsvcqajyvllqw.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

I’ve just run a full-scan with Microsoft Safety Scanner which has removed Exploit:JS/Blacole.A and Exploit:Java/Blacole.AE.

I've now rebooted and used RKill, which only seemed to kill Dropbox, and am running a full Malwarebytes scan.

* I'm assuming this malware has reappeared because I didn't remove everything on the 30th Oct?

* I’m also wondering if I’m running some dodgy version of Java, I get asked to run upates at least once every session?

* Will running ComboFix help?

Cheers

Hello, ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. If we feel iy's needed we will use it.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

Hi,

Thank you very much for your help.

Do I post the result.txt doc straight back to this thread? It looks like it contains some serious information!

Hello, looks like there were infections in perhaps a Tatto image and were deleted,

There's too much junk in your Hosys file.. Your HOSTS file may be infected.
Reset the HOSTS file
As this infection also changes your Windows HOSTS file, we want to replace this file with the default version for your operating system.
Some types of malware will alter the HOSTS file as part of its infection. Please follow the instructions provided in How do I reset the hosts file back to the default?

To reset the hosts file automatically,go HERE click the Posted Image button. Then just follow the prompts in the Fix it wizard.

OR
Click Run in the File Download dialog box or save MicrosoftFixit50267.msi to your Desktop and double-click on it to run. Then just follow the promots in the Fix it wizard.

This should prevent further Java Exploits...

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u1-windows-i586-s.exe (or jre-7u1-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Please ask any needed questions, post logs and Let us know how the PC is running now.
How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

Thank you again for all this help, it's very much appreciated.

So I've one immediate question, Result.txt lists Java programmes as,
Java Auto Updater (Version: 2.0.2.4)
Java™ 6 Update 22 (Version: 6.0.220)

I've now completed all the above. I only uninstalled Java™ 6 Update 22 (Version: 6.0.220). Here's the MBAM log,

****
Just a little worried as Malwarebytes' has been clear when Microsoft Safety Scanner and ESET have picked things up.
****

So thanks for the help yet again, and here are loads of questions, if you have the time:

Shall I delete the files now ESET has quarantined?

I ran RKill before contacting you, will Rkill have any on-going consequences?

The virus may have been as a result of a JPG I've downloaded - I was collecting Megan Fox images for a project, this may have been upto 8 weeks ago - might the virus even be in the JPG, I don't think any JPG files have been caught in a scan to date?

Any idea why Virgin Media Security hasn't detected any of this? (I'm going to read your Java links now, but you've got to wonder why such an essential update wasn't better flagged).

I'm going to change all my passwords, how worried should I be that my PC has been severely compromised?

I need to watch out more on-line, I thought I was pretty cautious!
Cheers, the PC maybe feels a little quicker with the internet maybe. Will keep running scans, & I'll keep you informed ;)

Let's see if there is other junk we can remove.
Run TFC by OT (Temp File Cleaner)
Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link

Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

Reboot into Safe Mode with Networking
How to start Windows 7 in Safe Mode
Next run Superantisypware (SAS):

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
If you have a problem downloading, installing or getting SAS to run, try downloading and using the SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner instead. Save the randomly named file (i.e. SAS_1710895.COM) to a usb drive or CD and transfer to the infected computer. Then double-click on it to launch and scan. The file is randomly named to help keep malware from blocking the scanner.

BTW, before doing any of the above, I ran MiniToolBox (which seems to have gone now! maybe I stuck it in the trash?) to see if it was still listing Java Auto Updater (Version: 2.0.2.4) as an Installed Program. It is not. Maybe this was one of the items ESET removed?

That's the good news,

Unfortunately Result.txt also came up with this about the Hosts file. Is it anything to be concerned about?

========================= Flush DNS: ===================================

Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.
Hosts file not detected in the default directory
