When I start up I do not have a desk top only the mouse

How do I get my desk top back. I have a recovery drive but I need to know if I can save my data.if so how? How do I use the recovery drive?

Perhaps you could provide a little more information. Such as exactly what is happening, when it started, what led up to it, what your system information is, etc.
