inspiron laptop running vista, seems I've got the worm on it.

saw these instructions on this forum, executed them and my reply...

ok - 1) Reboot into Safe Mode with Networking
ok - 2) Download RKill. execute it and Allow the information to be merged with the registry.
A black screen did appear and then disappear. However, it kept saying "Process not executed in the log."
I still have the log.
ok - 3) Next run Superantisypware (SAS):
ok - 4) Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
ok - 5) An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
ok - 6) If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes".
ok - 7)In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
ok - 8)Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
-Close browsers before scanning.
-Scan for tracking cookies.
-Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
ok - 9)Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
ok - 10)Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
?did not see ? 11)On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
ok - 12)On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
ok - 13) Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
ok - 14) After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK". fyi 188 items.
ok - 15) Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
ok - 16) A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
ok - 17)If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".

??? "SAS.exe could not start" 18)To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
• Click Close to exit the program.

Now reboot to Normal and run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

??? MBAM could not start"...

so I'm not sure what to do next. Nothing worked i guess..?!
thanks for helping,
Newby - kded4009

FYI: I see a privacy protection (shield multcolor icon) on my desktop that seems to be executing everytime reboots, doesn't seem to be any way to close it or delete it, but when clicked it requests $$$ to remove threats and it begins without my initative to scan the PC.. whatsup with that?

Also, I'm using another computer and an USB to download these program to/from.

This infection changes settings on your computer so that when you launch an executable, a file ending with .exe, it will instead launch the infection rather than the desired program. To fix this we must first download a Registry file that will fix these changes. From a clean computer, please download the following file and save it to a removable media such as a CD/DVD, external Drive, or USB flash drive.

FixNCR.reg

insert the removable device into the infected computer and open the folder the drive letter associated with it. You should now see the FixNCR.reg file that you had downloaded onto it. Double-click on the FixNCR.reg file to fix the Registry on your infected computer.

Run the W32.Blaster.Worm Removal Tool

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Try doing a System Restore to a date prior to the infection. Then try the Blaster tool.

tried to run system restore from accessories, "rstrui.exe can not start" reply.

So it seems anything with *.exe is not going to work on the laptop.

Is there another user account hat you can enter and try scans with.

If needed Create a user account

okay setup new user, Dale as the administrator, and the current (and only one) Tara made it standard user.

the FixNCR seems to have ran okay.

however, the fixblast.exe did not, says "you do not have administrator rights to run the tool. please contact...."
I downloaded the one from the link above. Is this the correct one?

thanks,

You saved fixblast to the desktop? Try right click on the icon and select Run As ADmin.

Interesting no blaster (sounds like Apollo13)

Run mBAM again ,,,if needed run FixNCR.reg

Post the MBAM log.. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

OK,, that Kryptic is a real troublemaker, when we are done you need to change any passwords on here.

We still have some work to do.
Clean the TEMP folders//
Run TFC by OT (Temp File Cleaner)
Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link

Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.
Run a FULL scan...
Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

Open MBAM in normal/regular mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select FULL scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

You need to update to Java 7 and Adobe Reader X or 10
Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u1-windows-i586-s.exe (or jre-7u1-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Similarly Update to Adobe Reader X (10.1.0)
Note UN check the box so you do not install the toolbar, unless you really want it..

Free! Google Toolbar search Google from any web page, block pop-ups

Yes, install Google Toolbar - optional

How is it running now??

There seems to be an usage of 102Gb of space but for what i dont know...

When running Tara user, the same misarranged Start button and its programs are showing.
