I have Windows XP Pro SP3, 2 Gig RAM on an HP Pavilion a1206n. I have just scanned using Spybot SD and Malware Bytes (both in Safe Mode) and the machine is still running very slow. I have also scanned in normal mode with ESET (which takes all night as I have external drives). Each of my scans came up with some bugs but then removed them (I assume). My typing lags, mouse movement lags and, in general, all actions on the computer lag, especially web based stuff. Can someone help? I use this computer for my office work.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Security Check just says "Preparing Done!" and does nothing after that. No Notepad file is produced.

Oops...nevermind. It worked!

I still need GMER log.

You're running two AV programs, Kaspersky and Avast.
One of them has to go.
Your choice.

So, I ran GMER and it generated some errors which I cannot remember right now (I will post them when I see them again). So, I restarted the machine and now I got teh blue screen of death. It says,

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

BAD_POOL_CALLER

[Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed...]

Technical Information:
*** STOP: 0x000000c2 (0x00000040, 0x00000000, 0x90000000, 0x00000000)"

Also, I uninstalled Kaspersky a while ago. So I don't know why it's showing there.

---------------------------------

UPDATE: Here is the GMER log file but I really don't know if it is complete b/c it generated errors.

All looks clean.

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

system idle process is still high

It should be. System Idle Process accounts for CPU NOT used.

As for Autoruns I can see some Kaspersky and ZoneAlarm leftovers.
Let's disable them and we'll see how it goes.

Re-run Autoruns. UN-check following items:

In "HKLM\Software\Classes\*\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers" section:
+ "Kaspersky Anti-Virus" "" "" "File not found: C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Internet Security 2010\shellex.dll"

In "HKLM\Software\Classes\Folder\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers" section:
+ "Kaspersky Anti-Virus" "" "" "File not found: C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Internet Security 2010\shellex.dll"

In "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects" section:
+ "ZoneAlarm Security Engine Registrar" "ZoneAlarm Browser Security" "Check Point Software Technologies" "c:\program files\checkpoint\zaforcefield\trustchecker\bin\trustcheckerieplugin.dll"

In "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar" section:
+ "ZoneAlarm Security Engine" "ZoneAlarm Browser Security" "Check Point Software Technologies" "c:\program files\checkpoint\zaforcefield\trustchecker\bin\trustcheckerieplugin.dll"

In "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services" section:
+ "vsmon" "Monitors internet traffic and generates alerts for disallowed access." "Check Point Software Technologies LTD" "c:\program files\checkpoint\zonealarm\vsmon.exe"

In "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services" section:
+ "KLIF" "Kaspersky Lab Interceptor and Filter" "Kaspersky Lab" "c:\windows\system32\drivers\klif.sys"
+ "Vsdatant" "ZoneAlarm Firewalling Driver" "Check Point Software Technologies LTD" "c:\windows\system32\vsdatant.sys"

In "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Appinit_Dlls" section:
+ "" "" "" "File not found: C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\kloehk.dll"
+ "C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\kloehk.dll" "" "" "File not found: C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\kloehk.dll"
+ "C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\mzvkbd3.dll" "" "" "File not found: C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\mzvkbd3.dll"

In "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify" section:
+ "klogon" "" "" "File not found: C:\WINDOWS\system32\klogon.dll"

Restart computer.

These ones say access denied...

In "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services" section:
+ "vsmon" "Monitors internet traffic and generates alerts for disallowed access." "Check Point Software Technologies LTD" "c:\program files\checkpoint\zonealarm\vsmon.exe"

In "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services" section:
+ "vsmon" "Monitors internet traffic and generates alerts for disallowed access." "Check Point Software Technologies LTD" "c:\program files\checkpoint\zonealarm\vsmon.exe"

In "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services" section:
+ "KLIF" "Kaspersky Lab Interceptor and Filter" "Kaspersky Lab" "c:\windows\system32\drivers\klif.sys"
+ "Vsdatant" "ZoneAlarm Firewalling Driver" "Check Point Software Technologies LTD" "c:\windows\system32\vsdatant.sys"

These it says the system cannot find the item specified...

+ "C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\kloehk.dll" "" "" "File not found: C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\kloehk.dll"
+ "C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\mzvkbd3.dll" "" "" "File not found: C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\mzvkbd3.dll"

It says "Access denied" whne you're trying to UN-check those lines in Autoruns?

Yes, it generates an error (opening a small box) and I have to click "Ok" or "X" to get out of it. I can try it again though. Let me see...

UPDATE:

Yes, it says "AutoRuns - Error changing item state: Access is denied"

But it looks like these two cleared up:

+ "C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\kloehk.dll" "" "" "File not found: C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\kloehk.dll"
+ "C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\mzvkbd3.dll" "" "" "File not found: C:\PROGRA~1\KASPER~1\KASPER~1\mzvkbd3.dll"

So it's just these three:

In "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services" section:
+ "vsmon" "Monitors internet traffic and generates alerts for disallowed access." "Check Point Software Technologies LTD" "c:\program files\checkpoint\zonealarm\vsmon.exe"

In "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services" section:
+ "KLIF" "Kaspersky Lab Interceptor and Filter" "Kaspersky Lab" "c:\windows\system32\drivers\klif.sys"
+ "Vsdatant" "ZoneAlarm Firewalling Driver" "Check Point Software Technologies LTD" "c:\windows\system32\vsdatant.sys"
