I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 on a Dell XPS 410 Desktop, dual core Pentium 2.4 ghz. Yesterday it started freezing and I got a Windows error message about my Nvidia drivers, then a BSOD. Restarted ok after that. This morning when I attempted to start it up it started but on the bootup screen there were little blue dots all over the normally black background on the initial bootup page, and on the next bootup screen little white exclamation marks all over it. I am also seeing typos in the menus on the screen, "Use!Up/Eown asrows to highlight desired item." for example. Then the bootup froze. I attempted a hard restart and it booted into Startup repair automatically which failed before the screen simply turned grey. Now I can't get it to start at all except in safe mode. I have uninstalled and reinstalled video drivers, also run system file checker from install disc and it found nothing.

:welcome:

Seems hardware related, but lets take a look:

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Click on Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:

Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

  • Select Command Prompt
  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.

I see no sign of malware. I would suggest a clean boot to troubleshoot the issue. Click on the following link for information:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

I would concentrate in the nVidia drivers. If the issue is due to these, then the Video Card is either malfunctioning, or you have installed the wrong drivers.

Keep me posted.

I have reinstalled drivers 3 times, completely wiping out all traces with Driver Sweeper each time. Card is 3 years old. Is there any way to determine if it's the card besides just trying a card I know to be good?

I doubt if able to do this in safe mode.

Click on the Orb, type dxdiag and press Enter. Click on the Display tab. Are there any problems indicated?

Try the clean boot. Are you able to boot in Normal Mode.

You can also check the Device Manager (Hold the Windows' key and tap on Pause/Brake) check the Display Adapters for any yellow signs.

dxdiag says "no problems found" under Notes but all details under device say either n/a or Not Available, so it seems like it can't view the details in safe mode. Device manager shows no yellow marks next to my video card under Display Adapters.

I just tried the clean boot and nothing I did changed the problem I'm having. I'm still seeing weird typos in the bootup screen and symbols that don't belong. I am unable to start the pc in normal mode, only safe mode.

More likely it is the Video Card. Did you attempted the troubleshooting in the link provided?

Go to the Device Manager and disable the Display Adapter (Right click on it and select disable), then boot in Normal Mode. Would it boot? If it does it will look as if you were in Safe Mode.

I did do some troubleshooting. My problem doesn't look exactly like any of the screenshots, although it KIND OF resembles the problem when video card's RAM starts to fail. Also I noticed they mentioned updating chipset drivers on the motherboard as a possible solution--could that be something I need to do? I have never updated them before.

I'll try disabling the Display Adapter when I get home from work. Thanks again for your time.
