Kind and gracious experts -

I think I have a whole host of things here. I have gone years and years without any such thing happening, and finally I fall prey. I really appreciate the help. Without any further ado...

Click here to download ewido anti-malware - it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. Then:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin (do not open any folders or open the windows control panel while the scan is in progress).
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido.

Rescan with HJT and post a new log here together with the ewido log so that any remnants can be removed manually.

You are running HijackThis from the Desktop; please create a new folder for it and move the program into the new folder

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\inet20002\services.exe
O2 - BHO: CIEPl Object - {F85E86D8-F796-4C97-AAA2-26664A98A42C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntload32.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LnkSet] C:\WINDOWS\RNapxs.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [srshost.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\srshost.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ntload32 - ntload32.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: IEFilter - {976A579C-EDE5-47CB-B738-2581DCDD2378} - IEFilter1.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Service.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: WinSock Extention Manager (WsEm Srv) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\mdmprs32.exe

Exit HijackThis when done. Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. Using Windows Explorer, find and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\srshost.exe

Exit Explorer and reboot into Normal Mode. Rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.

Dameon -

I was successful up until I tried finding the C:\WINDOWS\system32\srshost.exe file in safe mode. I was in safe mode, but was unable to find it. I ran a search and explored C:\WINDOWS\system32\ to no avail.

Here is my log after exiting safe mode and booting up as normal:

Again, thanks! You rock!

Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok. Scroll down and find the service called "WinSock Extention Manager". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok. Repeat the process for "Service". Close any open windows. Reboot and post a new HJT log.

Dameon -

Thank you for your continued help. I was able to accomplish all that you directed with the exception of stopping Winsock Extension Manager. It said it was unable to stop the process. I did however check to see if it was running and after the reboot 'Start' was highlighted whereas before 'Stop' was highlighted. I am not sure if this means that setting it to 'disable' solved the problem. Either way, here is the rescan of HijackThis. Thanks! By the way, I am going to be gone for about two weeks so I won't be able to re-visit the problem until then. Thank you for your help thus far. My machine here seems to be running much smoother and more clean. Your help is appreciated!

- Paul
