I have a Dell Inspiron 4150 with a removable CD drive. It has stopped recognizing CDs most of the time (its hit or miss sometimes). Is there anything I can do to try and improve the situation or would I need to buy a new CD drive?

Have you checked the connection on the CD drive to see if there are damaged or making poor contact? You may very well have a drive failing.
