formatting external hard drive

i bought an external hard drive, but don't need it any more, and was just going to return it. what is the best program to use to wipe the drive so there is 0% chance of anyone getting their hands on my data?

WD 500gb usb2/3.0 external hard drive.

You can download the tools from http://www.wdc.com and perform a low level format with it.

Hard drive prices have shot way up. You might want to reconsider returning it for that reason.

I'd keep it and use it for backups.
