I'm having the same issue that a lot of people seem to be having. Nothing in my start menu, nothing on the desktop, save the recycle bin. I booted in safe mode and the icons are back on the desktop but ghosted. any help would be most appreciated

For what its worth, this is now fixed. Followed the instructions on http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-system-restore and got most of the way there. Apparently the rootkit was still on there though and everything came back. I started over today, but Microsoft Security Essentials had a definitions update today, detected the problem and removed it. After using unhide, everything is back to good!
