My apologies, I should have mentioned that the initial GMER.ZIP would not run, a little windows note appeared, the only way I ran it was with the exe option. Currently, all of my desktop shortcuts are not working and the only way I can access anything is by right clicking, finding target and running from original file.
Really appreciate what you guys are doing, thanks in anticipation.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/425890 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
===

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Please post the logs and let me know if the problem persists.

I cannot install and run combofix, it says it is saving to desktop but saves into a cookies folder and when double clicking on desktop icon to run the programme, I get a windows pop up window saying I do not have access rights, the same applies to the security check file. I tried to save combofix to the c drive folder and it still will not work and when trying to run it from the online option, again, it just hangs.
I have no idea what to do next.
Thanks
Phil

OK, After re-downloading combofix, it again failed to start from the desktop. I opened "My Computer" and dragged the file from the pseudo desktop directly to the C drive and ran it from there. It performed all of its functions and the following is the text file. Will try and run security check after this post:

I need to check on this file.
It's reported in you DDS log but not in ComboFix.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cryptnet32.dll

If the file is present please >>> Run Jotti's malware scan: Please copy this line (in bold):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cryptnet32.dll
  • Go to Jotti's malware scan and click the Browse button,
  • A window will open, right-click in the File name field and choose Paste.
  • Click the Submit button and let the scan run uninterrupted.
  • At the end right-click the Permalink button and choose "Copy the link". Posted Image
  • Open Notepad (Start => All Programs => Accessories) and click "Edition" => "Paste".
Please copy and paste these Permalink in your next reply.
If Jotti is busy, please go to http://www.virustotal.com
===

Let me check your Destop settings.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

If your operating system is 64 bit download this tool:
SystemLook_x64.exe
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following bold text into the main textfield:

    :reg
    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Hi NasdaQ,
The computer is running slightly better now, McAffee is still disabled and IE is running without addons.

Jotti's scan cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system32\cryptnet32.dll and I cannot see the file myself anywhere.

The System Look came back with the following:

SystemLook 30.07.11 by jpshortstuff

No restrictions found on the System keys.

Let look at these.

Run the SystemLook tool and search for these keys.

system look came up with the following although I can no longer run it from the desktop, had to move it to the c:\ folder: Incidentally, all files saved initially to the desktop seem to be automatically moved to
C:\Documents and Settings\Sal\Cookies\Desktop
and are then locked from running.

Let see if we can unlock the files.

Lets scan the system with this tool.
  • Download Junction.zip and save it.
  • Unzip it and put junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
  • Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the run box and click OK:
"cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt" (include the quotes)
A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste or attach the content of it.

I've downloaded this and extracted it to the C:\windows directory but the "run" command keeps saying it can't find the file. I then tried running it directly through the command prompt window but I think I may have the syntax wrong, (not too hot with DOS) Attached is a screenshot.

Oh yes. forgot to mention that when I tried to unzip from the desktop, got a window saying I didn't have permission to do it.
